Job summary

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Hospital are inviting applicants to apply for a consultant geriatrician post in the Department of Health Services for Elderly People (HSEP) at the Hampstead site.

The successful applicant will be joining a group of 9 dynamic, forward looking consultants to deliver high quality care for older patients.

Applicants will be expected to have suitable experience in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM). On call is for acute geriatric medicine on a 1 in 10. There is also a commitment to teaching and educationally supervising medical students.

Main duties of the job

This role will be predominantly focused on delivering a consultant-led liaison service to frail and complex patients on the HSEP (Health Services for Elderly People) ward and developing our frailty liaison service. Clinical supervision and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level will also be an important aspect of this role. The appointee will also work closely and in partnership with our Acute Medicine colleagues as well as the wider multidisciplinary team.

Job responsibilities

This is a replacement consultant post. This post will be based at our Hampstead site. Applicants will be expected to have suitable experience in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM).

The successful applicant will deliver and develop high-quality care for older patients in several different clinical settings.

  • The appointee will deliver a consultant-led liaison service to frail and complex patients on the medical admission units, providing comprehensive geriatric care.
  • The appointee will also undertake ward rounds, conduct board rounds and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • The appointee will be responsible to ensure timely discharge planning for older patients.
  • The appointee will be expected to support the training of junior doctors.
  • Development of sub-specialty interests are encouraged.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Provision of equitable leave cover for HSEP consultant colleagues.
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
  • The appointee will work closely and in partnership with our acute medicine and specialty colleagues.
  • Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine or be within 6 months of obtaining Certificate of Completion of Training or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
