Consultant in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology

The Department of Dental Maxillofacial Radiology is seeking a substantive part-time (6 PA) Consultant to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking team. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and is looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.

The post will be based at Guy's Hospital at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an ongoing or temporary basis according to the demands of the service. Clinical areas covered will mainly include cone beam CT reporting, ultrasound imaging and radiological interventions. The new consultant will provide clinical services for Dental Directorate patients in support of the other Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology Consultants. One of the programmed activities will be dedicated to Kings College London to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Main duties of the job

  1. To provide service in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology at GSTFT in accordance with Trust guidelines and strategy of both GSTFT and strategy of KCL Dental Institute.
  2. To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  3. To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Job responsibilities

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

  1. The post holder must be dentally qualified and maintain GDC specialist registration in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology and be GDC registered.
  2. To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  3. To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  4. To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

Research, Teaching and Training

  1. The post holder must collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust's translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
  2. Provide high quality teaching to dental undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.
  3. Act as educational supervisor and appraiser, once suitably trained as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.

Performance Management

  1. Work with dental, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in clinical efficiency and quality of outcomes.
  2. Participate in financial management and efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively.
  3. Help to improve operational efficiency.

Staff Management

  1. Work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors' hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.
  2. Participate in the recruitment of junior staff as required.
  3. Be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.

Governance

  1. Review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data.
  2. Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis.
  3. Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior clinical staff.

Strategy and Business Planning

  1. Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust.

Leadership and Team Working

  1. Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications

  • Full GDC registration, Registered specialist in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology, CCST in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology or within 6 months of CCST.
  • Higher academic degree related to Dental Maxillofacial Radiology, such as a MSc, PhD etc.

Clinical Experience and Skills

  • Experience / training equivalent to that expected after 4 years of specialist training in Dental Maxillofacial Radiology.
  • Extensive experience of CBCT reporting, Ultrasound, and interventional radiology.
  • Ability to independently perform CBCT reporting and ultrasound investigations.
  • Experience of leading a multidisciplinary team.

Audit Management & IT

  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management in the secondary care setting.
  • Effective participation in audit including implementation of outcomes.

Research / Teaching Skill & Experience

  • Experience of organisation and clinical supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
  • Experience of providing and training in the NHS.

Leadership & Management Skills

  • Ability to communicate with clarity in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, and make decisions.

Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 a year p.a. excl. LZ
