We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The current opportunity is for consultants to join the dedicated Anaesthetics team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals and Pain management team which covers all UHB sites.
We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in Vascular, Regional and colorectal anaesthesia and a pain management component of the job plan. They will be expected to join the general on-call at Heartlands Hospital as part of the on-call commitment. The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services. If a consultant has a special interest in Pain medicine, then they will have a split job plan between Pain and Anaesthetics.
The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust's services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.
A standard full-time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours, and a full-time consultant will normally devote 8 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.

MANAGEMENT, SUPERVISORY, TEACHING, TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
Consultants who are appointed will be expected to complete the required training and become educational supervisors and participate in departmental teaching and training.
There will be opportunities to take up additional management and lead roles as consultants progress through their career.

Teaching & Training
The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in the areas of both teaching and research. Our resident anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. Due to the number of specialties covered at the Trust, we can deliver most of the curriculum across our four sites except advanced paediatric cases. We have therefore recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the resident anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.
UHB has an obligation to teach medical students and a commitment to the Birmingham and Warwickshire Schools of Anaesthesia. Involvement in structured teaching and lecturing to both these groups will be expected. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the university department of medical sciences.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Trust has an active Research and Development Department that helps with ethical committee submissions, planning, and funding for research projects. Within the departments of Anaesthesia & Critical Care at HGS there are two Professorial posts, an NIHR senior lecturer and a team of research nurses. The department encourages interest in and support of any ongoing research projects.
UHB has academic links with University of Birmingham, University of Warwick and Aston University and has a dedicated research facility -- MIDRU, which has the clinical trials pharmacy team and research laboratory.
The post holder will be encouraged to support the ongoing trials and participate in new research.
Clinical Audit & Governance
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
The Trust is committed to the development and maintenance of the highest clinical standards through individual appraisal. This will include the audit of personal and clinical practice, as well as involvement in departmental and specialty reviews. It will also involve attention to continuing professional development, to meet the requirements for continuing medical education as expected by the relevant Royal College, and the awareness of professional standards, with the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.
Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trust study leave policy. Current entitlements are 10 days of study or professional leave a year and £1,500 study leave budget a year.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the Directorate and Departmental audit and quality improvement programme. In addition, the department is currently engaging with the RCOA Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) and successful candidates are expected to participate in this.
Quarterly department governance meetings allow for the presentation and discussion of M&M cases, quality improvement projects and updates both as a whole department and in specialty groups.
