The ideal candidate will contribute to two or three subspecialities to provide rota flexibility and we are particularly looking for consultants with practical experience in Molecular Pathology. The involvement within the Molecular Pathology Diagnostic service at UHB will include reporting activity for cases referred to the department (UHB and mainly cases referred from other hospitals): this will comprise molecular immunohistochemistry reporting for various types of tumours using appropriate scoring systems, involvement in the clinical interpretation of NGS, Real time PCR tests in collaboration with senior BMS and Clinical Scientists; the activity will also include interaction with clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, companion diagnostics and NHSE in collaboration with the CSL for molecular pathology, the head BMS and the senior scientists.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

You will be supported by strong and experienced specialist reporting teams. The department is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is proactive in developing and adopting solutions to maintain high quality sustainable reporting including an expanding scientist reporting strategy, automated laboratory processes and imminent adoption of digital image reporting.

We advocate "lean principles" and are in the process of implementing a digital pathology solution. Job description

We anticipate that the job plan will comprise ten programmed activities. The only fixed elements of the direct clinical care activities for Consultant Histopathologists are the MDT meetings relating to areas of specialist histopathology reporting. The flexible elements of the direct clinical care activities (which include the majority of laboratory duties) and the supporting professional activities will be discussed in detail with the successful candidate upon appointment. The split of DCC to SPA activity will typically be 8.0: 2.0.

  • It is anticipated the full-time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities worked flexibly by mutual agreement (Appendix 1). These will include 8.0 PAs for direct clinical care and 2.0 SPAs for supporting professional activities. Laboratory duties are carried out on a rota basis by agreement with consultant colleagues. They include the provision of a comprehensive diagnostic histopathology service for The Trust.
  • Division of the cytopathology workload will be organised in agreement with other consultant colleagues in the department. It is anticipated that existing consultants will continue to have an input into the cytology service in line with areas of specialist histopathology reporting. Other appointees may be required to contribute to the cytopathology service in a similar manner.
  • Supporting professional activities will include supervision and training of Regional Histopathology Trainees, teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate), research, audit and continuing professional development.
  • The post holder will be provided with the necessary IT equipment and access to training to be in position to meet these objectives. Office space and secretarial support will be provided.
