Job description

We are seeking a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist to join Community Integrated Mental Health Service in South Newham.


This is an opportunity to join an established service providing integrated mental health care with GP Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in Newham.


Newham hosts a WHO Collaborating Centre (the only one specifically for Mental Health Service Development in the world) and the successful applicant will have opportunities for academic links with the Centre, and its large research group in social psychiatry and global mental health.


The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be enrolled on the Trust's highly regarded Improvement Science in Action training and will be encouraged to contribute to our unique Quality Improvement programme.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder will have overall clinical responsibility for service users on their caseload in their sub-team. They will lead on the delivery of high quality care in all settings ensure policies and procedures are followed develop close working links with GP colleagues in order to provide integrated holistic care and develop close working links with the acute locality treatment wards ensuring the right care is provided in the right setting.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
  • Higher training in approved training posts for minimum of 3 years and / or previous consultant training.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of Mental Health Act 1983 and Approved Clinician status

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of clinical work in General Adult Psychiatry at ST4-6 or Consultant level within the last 3 years
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
  • Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
  • Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
  • Experience of working on an inpatient ward

Desirable

  • Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
  • Knowledge & experience of recovery-informed service delivery and working with patients as experts by experience
  • Inpatient experience at consultant level

ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS/ ABILITIES

  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to work as a part of multidisciplinary, multi-model team
  • Ability to manage complex workloads and support others to do that
  • Consultation/liaison skills to services, teams and individuals

  • Training in a psychological therapy

TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

Essential

  • Experience in teaching junior staff
  • Good teaching and communication skills
  • Experience of teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of teaching non-medical mental health professionals

Desirable

  • Medical education qualification

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

Essential

  • Experience of research work, especially in general hospital patients and / or patients with medically unexplained symptoms
  • Audit experience

Desirable

  • Experience of grant-funded project work
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals in relevant academic fields

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to get on with colleagues
