Job Description

Are you ready to join a team of talented ecologists and shape the future of the environment? Join our dynamic Nature team as a Consultant Ecologist in our growing Cambridge, Croydon and Basingstoke offices (though other locations may be considered), as well as taking advantage of our flexible hybrid working model. At AECOM, we’re at the forefront of innovation, delivering an exceptional portfolio of Ecology programs and projects through long-term partnerships with key clients.

Presently, we are working on a wide range of projects, notably in the power and renewables, infrastructure, environment and transport sectors, as well as collaborating with other technical disciplines such as landscape, GIS, engineering, sustainability and drainage. Our recent projects have included several of the largest solar farms to have gained consent in the UK; a cable tunnel below the River Thames; electricity network upgrades in Kent and Suffolk; habitats regulations assessments of various plans and projects for local authorities; and masterplanning of new residential developments for local authorities.

AECOM offers tailored programmes for career progression at each stage of your career, specialist groups and networks to improve your technical knowledge (e.g. bats, Biodiversity Net Gain, Habitat Regulations Assessments etc.), and a supportive mentoring programme to help you shape your role within the company, pursue an interest in a specific topic, or whatever else may be of interest to you.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Organising and carrying out desk studies and field based habitat, botanical, protected and non-native invasive species surveys;
  • Undertaking the analysis, evaluation, interpretation and presentation of ecological data, including supporting production of Ecological Impact Assessments and design of mitigation strategies;
  • Safe delivery of protected species and habitat surveys; analysis and evaluation of results, impact assessments, and the design and implementation of successful mitigation strategies;
  • Performing the role of an Ecological Clerk of Works on construction projects;

If you're passionate about innovation and turning bold ideas into reality, AECOM welcomes you. Join our team, where we don't just construct infrastructure but also uplift communities and enhance lives.

Come grow with us.

Become part of our dynamic Nature business, which boasts around 150 professional experts including national and global leaders located across the UK&I, from species licence holders to experts in impact assessment, habitat creation, ecosystem restoration, enhancement, and management. At AECOM, you’ll thrive in an inclusive and forward-thinking environment where your contributions are valued.

Take advantage of career development opportunities, our flexible hybrid working model to ensure a work-life balance that suits your lifestyle, technical practice networks, AECOM University, and volunteering days.

Qualifications

Here's what we're looking for:

  • Experience of working in an ecology-related job role in the public and/or private sector, and designing, coordinating/leading field surveys;
  • Developing knowledge of UK and EC wildlife legislation and policy, particularly relevant to Wales, and the Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) process;
  • Experience in botanical identification, undertaking Phase 1 Habitat/NVC surveys and/or protected species surveys, preferably bats or dormouse;
  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands (ecology roles typically involve occasional longer/and/or unsociable hours and a degree of working away from home for days/weeks at a time);
  • Strong report writing skills, with demonstrable experience in producing a range of reports and providing ecological advice to clients and stakeholders.

We celebrate diversity, including neurodiversity, and believe it enriches our team. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and abilities.
