Applications are invited to apply for the above post in Dermatology at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). The post is based at the Department of Dermatology, Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

We are pleased to be able to advertise for a 10 PA Consultant Dermatologist to join our experienced team in Oxford (10 PA). This is a new post and includes vulval and leg ulcer clinics. Located within the Thames Valley, Oxford's service is a recognised centre of excellence with the region having one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the UK. We have state of the art surgical, diagnostic and laboratory facilities in a purpose built unit with plans for additional investment in the estate to cope with increasing demand. We are keen to recruit a colleague, who will relish the opportunity of working and teaching in this inspirational environment and relishes the challenge of developing services across the region.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will use most of his/her time in clinical activities directly relating to Dermatology. The total NHS work load is 10 PAs each week. The post-holder's duties will be based at the Department of Dermatology, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, but part of this post may require delivery clinical activity at other outreach clinics. Their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trusts. Clinical care may involve collaboration with and/or supervision of an intermediate dermatology service. The post-holder will also be required to maintain excellent links with primary care at a personal and administrative level.

Job responsibilities

Junior medical support and training: The Dermatology services participate in the Oxford Training Rotation, which consists of specialist training posts shared between several hospitals (The Churchill & John Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford, the Horton Hospital, Banbury and the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading). At any one time, we have at least 6 registrars/clinical fellows based in Oxford & Reading each spend approximately 24 months based in each department.

Out-patient clinics: The clinical work plan (see below) will typically involve PA sessions in out-patient clinic settings and PA sessions in supporting activity. The Dermatology Service in Oxford sees more than 48,000 patients per year including new referrals, follow-up consultations and clinical procedures including laser and surgery. Clinics at both sites normally consist of lists staffed by a consultant with a specialist or research registrar or clinical fellow and ST1-2. Nurse led clinics and surgical lists are well established and consultant supervised. There is a well-established email advice service in Oxford providing clinical advice by consultants with a 24-48 hour response time.

Ward rounds & in-patient cover: All in-patients are admitted on the Churchill site where possible or over at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

There are no acute general medicine on-call duties, but the dermatology consultants at Oxford take part in supervising the non-resident registrar on-call rota currently on a 1 in 13 basis. The Churchill Hospital has a resident general medical hospital-at-night ST1-2 rota shared between departments.

All consultants are expected to participate in the direction of the departments clinical audit programme, which will normally be carried out with the aid of the registrars.

  • CCST / CCT or registration on GMC Specialist Register in Dermatology OR within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview OR CESR

  • Higher medical degree e.g. PhD or MD submitted or awarded
Experience Essential
  • General training in Dermatology to consultant level or equivalent
  • High level of competence in diagnosis & management of skin cancer including use of dermoscopy
  • Competence and high standard in skin cancer surgery and use of biologic therapy
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
Desirable
  • Specialist experience of vulval dermatology

  • Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.

  • Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities.
