Job summary

Following a recent review of our outstanding Oncology service, we are pleased to be expanding our medical workforce numbers to meet the growing demand.

The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust hosts a leading regional Cancer Centre, and we are seeking a well-organized Clinical Consultant Oncologist to join our team. The successful candidate will provide expertise in the management and treatment of patients with Urology tumours, including offering Chemotherapy, systemic therapy, and Radiotherapy (including Stereotactic). This role offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team providing exceptional cancer care in a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre provides specialist Cancer and Haemato-Oncological care, including complex cancer surgery, to a catchment area of approximately 1.4 million people in South West Surrey and Hampshire. Non-surgical oncological treatment for these patients is provided at the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre, which is an integral part of the Trust. We have recently opened our newly refurbished Cancer Centre, and are delighted to offer a modern and welcoming environment for patients. We are proud to work collaboratively with local and regional cancer units and the Surrey Clinical Research Facility, and look forward to welcoming medical students from the newly opened University of Surrey Medical School.

Main duties of the job

Remit of the Consultant Post:

  1. Work with colleagues to provide a Urology oncology service.
  2. Provide the oncology service for Urology patients in the Guildford catchment area and prostate patients in the Frimley Park Hospital area.
  3. Offer Chemotherapy and systemic therapy expertise, as well as Radiotherapy (including Stereotactic), brachytherapy and molecular radiotherapy.
  4. Participate in regular consultant ward cover sessions.

This remit requires a well-organized individual with good team-working skills and the ability to complete work within agreed timescales in cooperation with all staff groups and with support from senior colleagues.

We are proud of our achievements and we are investing in our colleagues through our commitment to supporting professional development as well as investing more than £45 million in our physical environment and new equipment in the next few years. There has never been a better time to join us.

Although it isn't the Trust's normal practice, adverts may close early, so you are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Here at the Cancer Centre, we aim to provide first class, high quality care for all of our patients in a friendly and professional setting. Our services have received national recognition and praise and our patients benefit from the latest and most innovative treatments available, such as Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy, real-time adaptive radiotherapy, high dose rate brachytherapy and a mobile community infusion suite. We also deliver a full range of diagnostic nuclear medicine tests to both adult and paediatric patients, as well as providing a comprehensive Molecular Radiotherapy service (including I-131 for benign and malignant thyroid disease).

We have a close working partnership with the private Radiotherapy provider adjacent to the Trust, run by GenesisCare. This brings opportunities for Clinical Oncologists to access the MR Linac for not only private patients, but NHS patients.

We value the expertise of our skilled staff, and will support your professional development through dedicated SPA time, pursuing CPD opportunities and encouraging participation in clinical research. We aim to provide a supportive and collegiate working environment, where teams and individuals alike can reach their full potential. The cathedral city of Guildford offers excellent leisure, cultural and sporting facilities, is close to the stunning Surrey countryside, and is only 40 minutes by train to London.

We are looking for candidates who are on the Specialist Register for Clinical Oncology (or within six months of CCT date for resident doctors), have expertise and experience in Urology tumours, have a strong commitment to providing high-quality patient care and continuous professional development, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Whether you are applying for your first Consultant job or are an experienced Consultant seeking a new challenge, we look forward to hearing from you.
