We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant Anaesthetist within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

The current opportunity is for consultants to join the dedicated team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in Vascular, Regional and colorectal anaesthesia, they will be expected to join the general on-call at Heartlands Hospital as part of the on-call commitment. The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population. It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Good Hope Hospital. The new devolved structure means that Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull hospitals are now being managed by their own executive team.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The anaesthetic Department operates from Heartlands hospital providing anaesthetic services to all the three sites.

The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services, if a consultant has a special interest is in Pain medicine, then they will have a split job plan between Pain and Anaesthetics.

The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trusts services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours, and a full-time consultant will normally devote 8 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.

An example 10 PA job plan is indicated in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.

Job description

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH) is the referral centre for the city-wide vascular service and has two dedicated vascular theatres, one for vascular emergencies and one for endovascular service. We also have a dedicated elective paediatric surgical service set up for patients over the age of 1 has and offers trauma, ophthalmic, ENT and general surgery. Three theatres provide a dedicated trauma service offering surgery to 1500 patients with frailty fractures a year. A 20 bedded critical care unit and obstetric unit with one dedicated Elective and two emergency theatres complete the service. It has a busy emergency department which accounts for much of the out of hours work. The Heartlands Treatment Centre is a brand-new purpose-built centre opened in February 2023 and it houses a range of services, including outpatients, imaging, endoscopy and three-day surgery theatres, across four floors.

Good Hope Hospital (GHH) is the location for gynaecology, colorectal, elective Orthopaedics, revision arthroplasty and emergency surgery as well as a consultant-led delivery suite. It also has a critical care unit with provision of up to 20 beds and an emergency department.

Solihull Hospital (SHH) is a dedicated elective surgical site with no acute medical or surgical beds, providing upper and lower GI, breast, plastics, urology, ophthalmology, robotic urology, robotic colorectal and orthopaedic elective surgical services in 13 theatres, a 6 bedded Enhanced Postoperative Care Unit (EPOC) is jointly led by the anaesthetic service with dedicated consultant cover.

The anaesthetic department also provides a consultant-led acute pain service, a pre-operative assessment service as well as support for anaesthetics in remote areas such as endoscopy, radiology, Community Dentistry and Community Podiatry.

On - call commitments for this post are to either

The General on - call rota on the Heartlands Emergency theatre (The emergency service sees many general, vascular and urology cases per year.) Paediatric cases over the age of 2 are also cared for.

The Obstetric on call rota at Heartlands (obstetric special interest and training).

  • Ability to build strong and effective relationships with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Ability to cope with pressure and adapt to change
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to manage quality improvement projects and their implementation

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration
  • Inclusion on Specialist Registrar or if in training eligible for inclusion on the GMC
  • Register within 6 months from the day of interviews
  • FRCA or equivalent
