Compliance Manager (Soil Remediation)

Our client is an award-winning civil and environmental engineering company delivering effective solutions for the maintenance and management of the UK's waterways.
The company is restoring a wetland habitat, re-using material generated from in-house dredging operations on the Thames, and major infrastructure projects. The main site activity utilises the company's own wharf to unload and transport materials from barges and managing the disposal of those materials once onsite. The jetty facility is an approved port allowing ships to be loaded/unloaded with bulk waste cargoes. In addition to this, planning has been approved for a Soil-Washing Facility.
The company is looking to recruit a Compliance Manager to strengthen its existing site-based team to deliver the operational and statutory requirements of the site. This is an exciting time and opportunity to join the organisation and be an integral part of the preparations.
The Role and Key Responsibilities:
- Managing the waste acceptance procedure from enquiry through to tipping for both restoration and wash plant operations.
- Interpreting and reviewing site investigation reports and laboratory analysis, to classify wastes and conclude if acceptable for site, in line with the company's Environmental Permit and existing WAP.
- Ensuring there is sufficient sampling provided, and “risk assessing” the new site/enquiry, for the volume of project/site history/waste process.
- Visiting prospective project sites in London and the Southeast with suppliers.
- Negotiating with clients to secure new projects.
- Developing new contacts and exploring potential different waste stream leads.
- Together with Project and Operations Manager, coordinate so that projects/tipping are managed on site to maximise the commercial viability, whilst considering the restoration plan.
- Ensuring that quotes, Basic Characterisation Forms and any statutory paperwork for waste acceptance are completed.
- Working with operations team to ensure material received is compliant and progress/resolve any quality issues with the client.
- Oversee ongoing training relating to Waste Acceptance and be the facilitator of communications for setting the expected standards.
- As part of the management team, promote and instil a culture of compliance and quality in all activities across the site.
- Collate information for quarterly and annual reporting and permitting requirements.
- Coordinating on site soil sampling and collecting samples for rapid and Mcerts/WAC sampling at third party sites.
Candidate Requirements:- Good knowledge of waste classification. Must be able to analyse and interpret laboratory data.
- Ability to work in accordance with Environmental Permitting Regulations requirements and site-specific waste acceptance procedures.
- Ability to demonstrate in previous roles a history of building relationships and rapport with clients (to maintain good working relationships and procure new projects).
- Experience of providing regular reporting to relevant regulatory bodies.
- Understanding and able to balance both compliance requirements and commercial opportunities.
- Minimum of 2-years field-based environmental testing experience and knowledge or Specialist Project service-related experience.
- Ideally possess a scientific degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences or related subject.
- Good IT skills and effective user of MS Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to liaise and converse effectively with clients in a professional manner.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Good organisational skills.
- Proactive approach to HSQE.
