Job summary

We are seeking a Commercial Lead in Corporate Services to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the transformation of NHSBT's Commercial function. You will collaborate with a team of commercial experts specializing in corporate services, working with some of the world's leading global and health technology suppliers to ensure we maximize the value of our significant investments.

You will be passionate about building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and colleagues across Commercial as well as the wider NHS Blood and Transplant organization. You will collaborate and engage with programs and colleagues across all levels, providing sound advice and influencing commercial outcomes and strategies. You will contribute towards increasing savings for NHSBT, driving quality and value for NHSBT.

You will be part of a team that is at the forefront of collaboratively harnessing the power of the marketplace and delivering maximum value to our healthcare system. You will lead, actively engage, and collaborate with stakeholders including other public sector bodies to embed the Commercial strategy.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be responsible for delivering a pipeline of procurements, primarily in the corporate category. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with program teams and commercial function colleagues to identify and agree present and future needs, linkages to other activity areas, and related potential needs for procurement.
  • Producing written reports and presentations to the Head of Commercial Operations, Commercial Director, Director of Finance, SMTs, Executive, Chief Executive, and Board on key commercial matters.
  • Running procurements in accordance with the Procurement Act 2023 and public contracts regulations (2015) to deliver stakeholders' requirements and ensure the best value for money.
  • Building and maintaining an understanding of relevant supply markets and business context to inform and support the delivery of commercial strategies.
  • Inputting to commercial policy and service development, including devising new policies and working practices to ensure legal compliance and performance against KPIs.
  • Communicating complex commercial information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading the development and implementation of innovative procurement solutions to meet the evolving needs of the organization.
  • Managing supplier relationships to foster collaboration and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements in procurement activities.

If shortlisted, you will be required to attend the Government Commercial Function assessment centre (ADC). This will be a one-day process on Wednesday 14th May 2025 and further guidance on this is attached.

Interviews are anticipated to be held week of 26th May, after the ADC assessment – subject to confirmation.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
  • CIPS level 6 or equivalent level of qualification or knowledge and experience.
  • MSC in Procurement / Business / Economics or able to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge & experience.
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
Experience Essential
  • Significant post qualification experience of managing sourcing and procurement across a wide range of categories, and of implementing category management.
  • Proven record of procurement & understanding of the strategic issues of sourcing and procurement.
  • Experience of working in a complex and diverse organization (public and/or private sector) at a senior management level.
  • Track record of delivering commercial benefits, including cashable savings.
  • Experience of working with, and understanding of, a wide variety of public, private and voluntary agencies (e.g. central Government departments, NHS Trusts, consortiums, etc.).
  • Expert knowledge of top sourcing and procurement practice including, advanced knowledge of procurement regulations and related legislation.
  • Advanced negotiation, project planning and supplier relationship management skills; complex and high-level negotiations.
  • Commercial analysis and appraisal skills, including business case development.
  • Significant experience of sourcing and procurement planning.
  • Leadership and budget management experience.
