The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team to assess and treat a range of mental health conditions, challenging behaviors, and severe and enduring mental illnesses.

This approach is at the heart of our Trauma-Informed Approaches (TIA), where we recognise the connection between life experiences and the development of mental health difficulties.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assume the role of Unit/Site Coordinator at least four times a month. They will provide unit management support and coordinate patient flow (bed management) outside of regular hours. Additionally, the Unit Coordinator will offer senior nursing support, professional leadership, and guidance in all clinical areas within the unit, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We are seeking an individual with excellent communication skills, capable of engaging effectively with service users, their carers, and other professionals.

The ideal candidate will have:

Please note, that this role requires successful candidates to participate in Therapeutic Management of Violence and Aggression (TMVA) training, including the use of force techniques, due to the high-acuity nature of the ward and the need to ensure the safety of both patients and staff. Candidates must complete TMVA training during their employment to be considered for the position.

Band 6 nurses often work with individuals who have complex needs and contribute to the effectiveness of services by:

1. Demonstrating confidence as autonomous practitioners, taking responsibility for their care delivery while overseeing the work of less experienced staff.
2. Providing skilled, evidence-based nursing care in line with established policies and procedures.
3. Collaborating with patients and families throughout the care planning process, including assessing risks and needs.
4. Advocating for patients within the multi-disciplinary team and ensuring others on the team provide clinically effective care.
5. Reflecting on their practice regularly and encouraging team reflection during handovers and meetings.
6. Promoting learning from adverse events, audits, or benchmarking exercises to implement improvements in clinical outcomes.

Band 6 nurses contribute to patients feeling respected and empowered by:

1. Partnering with patients and their families and carers.
2. Gaining consent and, whenever possible, involving patients in decision-making.
3. Referring patients and carers to relevant courses and services, such as those provided by the Recovery and Wellbeing College or local authorities.
4. Offering reassurance through professionalism, responsiveness, and confidence.
5. Demonstrating clinical leadership by addressing poor behaviour and fostering a positive, inclusive culture where kindness and respect are prioritized, and the Trusts values are integrated into practice.
6. Addressing complaints or concerns promptly and by Trust policies.

Teamwork and Leadership

As a Band 6 nurse, you will be an excellent team player, facilitating collaborative working to ensure high standards of assessment, care, and treatment for patients both within the ward and the wider unit. Additionally, you will demonstrate leadership skills by guiding the nursing team on the ward and across the wider unit when taking on the role of unit coordinator.

Qualifications

• Registered NMC Mental Health Nurse
• Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines
• Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development

Experience

• Previous experience as a Band 5 nurse

• Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, take note of actions, update others in the team and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face but also by telephone and writing letters and reports.
• Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies
