Job description

We have a vacancy for one Clinical Teaching Fellow (CT1/2 level) in ENT at Somerset Foundation Trust, site location of Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

This is a combined clinical and teaching post, ideally suited to an individual who has completed an F2 year or equivalent, and wishes to gain formal experience in undergraduate teaching and ENT prior to commencing Core Training. On average, half of the working week will be clinical and the other half devoted to teaching of Bristol medical students and educational learning. The post holder will be encouraged to embark on a course leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, which will be funded by the Academy.

The clinical element of this post will be based in the Ears, Nose & Throat (ENT) Service.

This is not a recognised training post, but provides an excellent opportunity to develop teaching and clinical skills as well as portfolio preparation. You will be fully supported to develop your portfolio, interview skills etc.

The job role is fixed term for 12 months, the contract will run from 6th August 2025 to 4th August 2026.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will gain experience in ENT and encouraged to keep an up-to-date portfolio for ST applications. Interview practice and help with the portfolio is available, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to take part in surgical audit and other projects.

The post holders will help facilitate the delivery of the University of Bristol undergraduate curriculum to year 3, 4 & 5 medical students at Musgrove Park Hospital.

• Clinical teaching fellows (CTFs) deliver core curriculum content, act as tutors and are involved with the assessment of medical students.
• The post holder will be expected to act as a role model and mentor to the medical students.
• The post holder will help develop teaching materials.
• Clinical teaching fellows are expected to be able to deliver several types of teaching including induction sessions, small group tutorials, clinical-based history and examination sessions, facilitation of inter-Academy Hub sessions, bedside teaching, teaching clinics, clinical reasoning skills, and simulation-based teaching.

The role is split into 50% in ENT and 50% in Undergraduate Education with the working pattern of:

• The undergraduate education element is often worked core hours between 8:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday.
• The ENT element includes ENT First on call. Weekdays 1 in 7 day-time and/or early evening shifts (8:00 -- 21:15), weekends 1 in 7 day-time and early evening shifts (08:15 -- 21:15). There are no night duties expected for this role.

Job responsibilities

The CTF appointed for ENT will be in the Ears, Nose & Throat department. In summary, the main duties include:

• Case Based Learning facilitation, lecture based, seminar, anatomy and clinical skills teaching and SIM training.
• You will be expected to deliver some generic non-ENT teaching (e.g., case based learning, pharmacology) and clinical skills.
• Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance (e.g., bedside teaching).
• Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
• Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning objectives.
• Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems.
• Develop your understanding of the dynamics of group work addressing specific issues and providing assistance/guidance to both groups and individuals as necessary.
• Be available to support specific topics, questions or concepts at the request of individual students, subject to available time.
• Assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive feedback to students. This will also involve OSCE examinations and Long case examinations as well as assessing through case based discussion, mini-CEX and DOPS.
• Act as a mentor for students. Take an informal role in student pastoral care such as identification of "at risk" students and dysfunctional groups, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help.
• Support other clinical education fellows and mentor as appropriate.
• Involvement in the student choice/external student selected component (e-SSC) is encouraged and developing appropriate projects for students to complete is an expected component of the role.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Primary Medical Degree.
• Active GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of applying.
• ALS or ATLS.
• BSc, BA or equivalent with grade 1 or 2:1.

Experience

• Completion of 2 year foundation programme in the UK or equivalent.
• Resuscitation experience.
• Pursuing post in core or higher surgical training.
• Previous ENT experience at foundation or core trainee level.
