Job description

The Medical Education Faculty is delighted to announce that it is advertising several Teaching Fellow roles across the Trust that will work two or three days supporting the delivery of medical education, predominantly medical student teaching, with the other time in a clinical setting. They will support medical students from HYMS, Leeds, Newcastle and Sunderland Medical Schools and can either be at FY3 or SAS level. The post is popular with both post FY2 or post CT doctors who would like to further develop skills in teaching, simulation and curriculum delivery.


Main duties of the job

The medical education component of the role will involve the delivery, support and assessment of medical students from the medical schools that we partner. There will also be other opportunities to support the Faculty of Medical Education on key projects that we will align to other areas of special interest in medical education to include completing a poster presentation on an educational topic at a regional or national conference in the year of employment. You will also have regular Medical Education Supervision support sessions and opportunity for development and feedback on your teaching skills.


The clinical component of the role is not yet fixed, and it is our intention to match the successful candidates to a work area where the service would benefit from additional medical support.

Job responsibilities

These will be specific to the service that the post will be attached to, however will include:

Duties of the Post/Roles and responsibilities of speciality doctor

Generic:

  • Perform clinical assessment of individuals with mental health problems, including history taking, mental state examination, physical examination
  • Develop evaluation and formulation skills
  • Assessment and management of psychiatric emergencies
  • Understanding of pharmacological management of common mental health problems
  • Develop interview and risk assessment skills
  • Develop a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including with non-medical prescribers

Specific (Depending upon post):

  • Assessment and management of individuals with mental illness
  • Knowledge of pharmacological management of psychosis, including treatment-resistant and complex cases
  • Develop an understanding of psychosocial interventions
  • Have an appreciation of the importance of physical health issues in psychosis
  • To assess, review and contribute to the management of inpatients.
  • To join and contribute to ward rounds.
  • Memory/outpatient clinic 1-2 new patients per week and 2-3 follow up patients per week are seen by trainee under supervision of consultant.
  • To maintain up to date electronic and other medical records of high standard.
  • To attend CPA/Care Coordination meetings.
  • To provide support to CMHT and to see carers/relatives as required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent psychiatric qualification

Experience

Essential

  • At least 4 years postgraduate experience, including at least 2 years in a core psychiatry training programme in UK or abroad
  • Able to demonstrate good clinical skills and knowledge in psychiatry with bio-psycho-social perspective.
  • Able to demonstrate good clinical communication skills showing empathy and sensitivity.
  • Person-centred and recovery focused.
  • Participated in and reflected on the purpose of continuous professional development
  • Participated actively in clinical audit.
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
  • Able to demonstrate higher level skills in delivering undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.

Desirable

  • Approved under S12 of MHA OR able to achieve within 6 months of appointment
  • Postgraduate experience in the relevant specialty.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Able to undertake duties under MHA and MCA.
