Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Band 2 Clinical Support Worker to join our dynamic team on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This is an excellent opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, supporting patients with a wide range of acute medical conditions.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Support Worker in Acute Care plays a key role in assisting registered nurses and other healthcare professionals in providing high-quality care to patients, within the scope of their training, competence, and experience.

You will help maintain a safe and efficient care environment, while also taking on housekeeping, clerical, ancillary, and portering duties as needed to support patient care.

Although you will encounter varying levels of patient care needs, you will be fully supported and trained to develop the required competencies for your clinical role.

As a Clinical Support Worker, you may be assigned to work in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Short Stay Unit, or Ambulatory Care Unit, all of which cater to patients in emergency situations or those requiring acute medical interventions. This provides you with the opportunity to gain experience in a range of acute care settings while receiving tailored support and development through a personalised training plan.

You will also be assigned a Professional Development Registered Nurse, who will oversee your education and ensure it aligns with the patient care responsibilities specific to your assigned area, fostering your growth and competence in acute care.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and brand new, state of the art Emergency Department is in the process of being completed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent experience/ CARE certificate

Experience

  • Experience working in a healthcare setting, particularly in acute or medical care environments
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in an Acute Medical Unit or similar high-pressure clinical setting.
  • Experience in supporting patients with complex needs or high acuity.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to carry out basic clinical tasks under supervision, assisting with personal care, and supporting mobility.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, with a commitment to upholding dignity and promoting independence.
  • Ability to recognise changes in a patient's condition and escalate concerns appropriately to senior staff.
  • Knowledge of infection control, manual handling, and health and safety policies in a healthcare setting.
