Job Summary

We are looking for a dynamic, technically-minded individual to support our Clinical Skills and Resuscitation Department. We deliver high-quality courses for our staff, doctors across the region, and the wider NHS. You will be a team player, capable of managing your own workload; an excellent people person and able to quickly build relationships with a wide variety of professionals. You will ensure that all our courses are technically supported, with the right support and kit in the right place at the right time, and you will work with the wider team to grow simulation-based education across the organisation.


Main duties of the job

The Clinical Skills & Resuscitation Simulation Technician's role will be responsible for ensuring a safe and well-equipped environment, tailored to the needs of RWT's vast portfolio of simulation-based courses and events. The post holder will provide technical support within the Clinical Skills & Resuscitation Department, Simward, and InSitu Sim throughout the Trust. Under the direction of the Lead for iSIM, the post holder will have the responsibility to ensure that courses are set-up and set down in a timely manner, with effective use of resources, and be able to troubleshoot both AV support and technical skills equipment throughout the delivery of education. Inventory and stock management will be another key aspect of the role.

Job Description


Job responsibilities

To act as the main point of contact for all technical aspects of SBE activities including but not limited to high-fidelity manikins and audio-visual systems. The post holder will work as a member of the Clinical Skills and Resuscitation team and will support the delivery and growth of all aspects of Simulation Based Education. They will support the delivery of SBE and clinical skills sessions and will also play a key technical role during training sessions.


The Post Holder Will Have Responsibility For:

  1. All computer and audio/video (A/V) technology.
  2. High fidelity manikins (Preparation, set up, and set down).
  3. Simulation suite equipment.
  4. Preparation of training environments.
  5. Managing equipment stock levels.
  6. Maintaining equipment, linking closely with corporate industry reps from relevant companies.
  7. Ensuring resources are available for all training programmes in a timely manner.

The post holder will ensure that teaching areas are fully prepared for education. This includes ensuring audio-visual equipment, medical meat, complex simulators, and simulation kit is prepared and available in simulation suites and clinical teaching areas and in situ. The post holder will ensure teaching areas return to a neutral state following training sessions.


The post holder will undertake necessary training for the use of a variety of complex clinical skills simulators in order to train and support users. The Senior Simulation Technician will offer expert advice to faculty and Course Directors around preparation and development of Clinical Skills and simulation technology and kit. They will also provide expert guidance on failing equipment and escalate the need for replacement equipment.


The Senior Simulation Technician will provide a flexible approach to working and support for a wide range of educational events, including out of hours to ensure continuity of service. The Senior Simulation Technician will supervise junior colleagues and support the clinical trainers in their daily work, pertaining to the job role.


The Senior Simulation Technician will work autonomously and have the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve. They will be able to independently support in-situ education delivery around the Trust. They will provide a high-quality technical service to educators, faculty, and the wider simulation-based education team.


To produce high-quality comprehensive written technical guides for educational events and courses, and ensure they are kept up to date. To be responsible for the ordering of kit and consumables and also the maintenance and repair of manikins, complex clinical skills simulators, and virtual reality kit.


To be able to forge strong relationships with corporate industry representatives to ensure a high-quality technical service delivery. To liaise and communicate with industry representatives in the supply of kit and for kit maintenance and repair.


Maintaining a professional manner at all times, whilst representing Medical Education including ordering, preparing, and cleaning of animal tissue and working to the health and safety policy guidelines.


To be a member of and work alongside the wider Clinical skills, Resus, Simulation Faculty teams in the planning set up, delivery, and set down of local and national simulation courses. The post holder will support course direction in terms of timing and the changing of kit and its location during sessions.


To work independently in the set up and set down of complex laparoscopic surgical courses, Royal College of Surgeons, NHSE Simulation Regional and Resuscitation Council and Simulation courses.


To manage and organise a technical/academic delivery curriculum and make arrangements for continuity of delivery in their absence to ensure the technician calendar is kept up to date.


To work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the development of training, collaborative protocols/practices/procedures, and care.


To adhere to the ASPiH code of Professional Conduct for Clinical Skills and Simulation.


To attend ASPiH conferences to maintain current national knowledge of the wider simulation community.


To directly facilitate and assist with training programmes using simulated patients (actors) and patient simulators. This will include:

  1. Technical support in the education centre and clinical areas during training events.
  2. Set up and run clinical scenarios alongside and at times for clinical educators, dependent upon subject matter.
  3. Operational delivery of technical elements e.g. simulators, medical devices.
  4. Provision of AV equipment.
  5. On occasion, assist with delivery of Simulation by means of patient role-play.
  6. Support course direction in terms of timing and the changing of kit and its location during live sessions.

To communicate effectively within and outside the Trust regarding simulation technical issues both written and oral. To evaluate and order equipment and supplies as required and ensure all pieces of equipment are in working order.


To work with colleagues to ensure development and management of the simulation pages on the Trust website. To have the ability to make decisions that are not always straightforward and may have multiple factors to consider.


To produce high-quality, comprehensive technical guides for each course. To support in-situ within a variety of clinical areas independently and effectively.


To operate, maintain, and manage the simulation mannequins/kit/cameras during and in preparation for courses. Troubleshoot and assist when technical issues arise.


To advise and provide technical kit costing for new course equipment development. To escalate concerns within the team and department to the appropriate manager when necessary.


To ensure that information governance policy is established and communicated within the simulation centre when filming occurs. To play a key role in the filming of articles and editing the content as the need arises.


Any other duties appropriate to the banding of the post as per service requirements and the request of management. To work flexibly out of hours including evenings and weekends when required and shift patterns when needed.


To have a sound understanding of electrical safety of medical equipment, knowledge of specialist skills and simulation equipment. To have the ability to work in a clinical setting whilst supporting in-situ simulation with advanced manikins and video kit.


Person Specification


Experience/Skills Essential

  • Experience of working with technology-based equipment and AV equipment.
  • Ability to collate research/audit data.
  • Ability to use a variety of IT software. Trained in the maintenance and use of wet lab and skills and simulation equipment.

Qualifications Essential

  • Degree level or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Computer-based qualification such as IT, ECDL and/or proven equivalent (online related tutorials certificates etc.) in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Maths & English GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent.
