About UsThe Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) is one of the largest and most successful centres for research and education in the UK. The Faculty was created as a result of the merger of elements of the School of Biomedical Sciences with the School of Medicine. The merger brings together basic, translational and clinical scientists to provide new cross-School research collaborations while optimising the deployment of teaching expertise across the Faculty. The Faculty has unparalleled expertise in basic, translational and clinical research in: analytical and forensic science; asthma and allergy; biophysics and cell biology; cancer; cardiovascular; nutrition and diabetes; genetics; infection and immunology; imaging and biomedical engineering; transplantation immunology; pharmaceutical science; physiology and women's health. We also have thriving research programmes in global health, and health and social care.
Within FoLSM, the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences is a cutting-edge research and teaching School dedicated to development, translation and clinical application within medical imaging and computational modelling technologies. Our objective is to facilitate research and teaching guided by clinical questions and is aimed at novelty, understanding of physiology and pathophysiology as well as development of new diagnostic tools and therapies. The School consists of eight research departments: Cardiovascular Imaging, Cancer Imaging, Early Life Imaging, Imaging Chemistry & Biology, Biomedical Computing, Surgical & Interventional Engineering, Imaging Physics & Engineering and Digital Twins for Healthcare.
The Research Department of Cardiovascular Imaging delivers a cutting-edge programme of clinical and research activity to ~8,000 patients and research participants each year, including provision of the adult non-congenital Cardiovascular MRI clinical service and embedded research programmes. The Department already includes 9 Clinical Academic Consultants and ~20 NHS Consultants working on a sessional basis, supported by ~20 Clinical Research Fellows and ~40 Professional Services staff (including a Director of Operations, Facility Manager, Radiographers, Research Nurses, Clinical & Research Governance staff, and a team of clinical/research administrators/co-ordinators.
About the RoleThe School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is seeking an exceptional clinical academic to join its Department of Cardiovascular Imaging and the Cardiovascular MRI Clinical Service at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). The post holder will play a major role in the clinical, academic and teaching work of the School, and will be responsible to the BMEIS Head of School (Prof Seb Ourselin), and to the Head of the Research Department of Cardiovascular Imaging and Cardiovascular MRI Clinical Lead (Prof Amedeo Chiribiri). Clinically, they will also report to the GSTT Clinical Directors for Cardiovascular Services. They will be responsible, together with consultant colleagues, for the provision of cardiovascular MRI services to GSTT and other NHS Trusts and Healthcare Providers who refer patients for our specialist services.
The post-holder will be integral to the delivery of the adult non-congenital Cardiovascular MRI clinical service and embedded research programmes and will be expected to support clinical and research fellows in training as they rotate through the speciality. The post-holder will be a fully trained and independent consultant cardiologist capable of supervising cardiovascular MRI clinical lists and research patients and reporting complex scans independently. They must be fully registered with the GMC and hold Licence to Practise and be on the Specialist Register. Moreover, they must have SCMR/EACVI/BSCMR certification in Cardiovascular MRI as a Level 3 accredited physician. They will be part of the Cardiovascular MRI leadership team, with additional clinical responsibilities that include appropriate vetting of referrals and effective communications with referrers, ongoing review and development of imaging protocols in conjunction with the technical teams, and close working with the specialist cardiovascular MRI radiography team to ensure best practice and safety is observed for all patients. Academic activities will be centred on the development and use of new imaging and related methods to understand the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease in the fields of acute and subacute coronary syndromes, HFpEF, valvular heart disease, hypertension and cardiometabolic diseases. Research activities will also link to clinical duties, enabling the recruitment of patients to portfolio-adopted clinical studies, as well as integrating cardiovascular MRI with other imaging modalities within BMEIS/GSTT, e.g. cardiac PET/SPECT/CT.
This is a full-time post (40 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
