Job description

The LNWUH is a research active Trust. The St Mark's team and R& I are committed to improving healthcare services by promoting and supporting a wide range of high quality research.

The post holder will support the aims of the Trust and the NIHR clinical research network to improve the speed, quality, and integration of clinical research, through the successful delivery of clinical research in the NHS.

The post holder is a recognised expert in one or more specialities and in the field of clinical research, providing advice, care and support to patients entering clinical trials. He/she will take responsibility for the planning, development and implementation of the clinical research portfolio that reflects the patient population, the work and interests of the local clinical teams.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include:

  1. Taking a leading role in the management of care pathways for patients and carers participating in research, ensuring that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.
  2. Providing expert support to colleagues through the research study process, from grant application to feasibility, to clinical pathways, to study delivery.
  3. Working collaboratively with the research teams and the wider multidisciplinary team and acting as a professional role model, providing clinical care and teaching to staff researchers, research participants, and patients.
  4. Leading on the development and updating of local policies and procedures and contributing to the development of national policies.
  5. Ensuring that any research undertaken safeguards the well-being of research participants and is conducted to ICH Good Clinical Practice.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential
  • Health professional registration or first degree in life sciences.
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent experience and evidence of ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Experience of establishing and developing effective relationships with key stakeholders.

Desirable
  • Masters Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Project Management qualification or experience.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential
  • Understanding of study set up, local approvals processes and financial and budgetary management.
  • Experience of supervision and line management of staff.
  • Experience of establishing and developing effective relationships with key stakeholders.

Desirable
  • Understanding of grant application process.

Skills, Abilities and Attributes

Essential
  • Highly developed leadership skills with the ability to influence individuals both within and outside the organisation.
  • Expert knowledge of clinical research methodology and trial protocols and to communicate this to professionals and lay persons.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate complex information to a wide range of audiences and through a variety of mediums with confidence, empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to carry out the duties of the post with or without adaptations.
