Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Research Nurse to join our team. We are looking to appoint a dynamic, self-driven individual to join a well-established successful Innovation, Research and Development department.


Candidates will be registered nurses with substantial post-registration experience. A minimum of 18 months experience of either working within clinical research delivery or a clinical specialty is required for the smooth transition into this post.


The role includes but is not limited to:

  1. Delivering commercial and academic clinical trials across Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust, working with a team of professionals with a wide range of responsibilities.
  2. Possessing excellent communication skills with the ability to manage and prioritise allocated workload.
  3. Knowledge in research design methods and understanding of analytical processes is desirable.
  4. Being a team player with the competence to work independently across the trust, establishing networks of communication in multiple specialities and support services.
  5. Conducting a variety of clinical trials necessitating a high level of organisational skills including detailed high-quality data in accordance to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  6. Supporting trial/study set up, ensuring the smooth planning and running of clinical trials in accordance with ICH GCP, standard operating procedures, clinical trials protocols, and Trust policies.
  7. Providing accurate data management and reporting of safety findings in accordance with GCP, Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Ethics Committee (REC), and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) standards.
  8. Managing accurate and comprehensive records of data derived from research studies while safeguarding the well-being of patients, all conducted within ICH Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for Research.
  9. Recruiting patients to both commercially and academically sponsored clinical trials within the trust and monitoring those patients during the trial period.
  10. Establishing good lines of communication with local speciality teams, support services, and external research teams.
  11. Having a broad range of clinical skills and assessment techniques, such as venepuncture, ECG acquisition, spirometry, etc.
  12. Exhibiting excellent time management skills and the ability to manage and prioritise allocated workload across varying specialties.
  13. Having keyboard and general IT experience to support data management.
  14. Working towards achieving all Band 6 research nurse competencies within 12-24 months.

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. With support and supervision, the candidate will be able:

  1. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care working as a member of the research team.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills and effect management of laboratory samples, including processing complex blood samples (training will be provided).
  3. Work alongside medical and non-medical staff, attending MDT, investigator meetings, and other research events on and off site.
  4. Demonstrate exceptional organisational & multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritise appropriately.
  5. Provide safe and accountable management of investigational medicinal products (IMPs).
  6. Delegate appropriately to junior staff.
  7. Work effectively both autonomously and within a close-working team.
  8. Encourage a positive, motivating environment conducive for working, supporting colleagues and patients.
  9. Understand the patient's research journey.
  10. Maintain a consistent high standard of detailed documentation.
  11. Read, interpret & understand research protocols.
  12. Willing to undertake GCP & other essential research training.
  13. Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  14. Be responsible for all nursing care standards and to maintain high clinical standards.
  15. Act as a role model who demonstrates compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust.
  16. Engage, enable, and empower others using coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement, facilitating team working and collaboration within teams/departments and across organisational boundaries.
