Job description

Job summary

This post is a 15 hour per week permanent post.

Due to recent investment, the Plym neurological rehabilitation unit is seeking an experienced registered nurse with highly specialist neuro expertise to lead and manage the delivery of training and education to meet the service requirements of the unit.

The Plym neurological rehabilitation unit is a regional 2a unit offering rehabilitation to the most complex of patients within Devon and Cornwall. In recent months, the unit has moved to a brand-new environment which allows for greater opportunities for patients accessing this specialist service.

The unit has a renowned reputation regionally and nationally for its care and patient outcomes and excels in delivering on all Key performance indicators whilst providing safe and goal-oriented patient-centered care.

The unit provides intensive inpatient specialist rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other neurological conditions. As part of this regional responsibility, one key area that the unit offers is rehabilitation to patients with tracheostomies. Plym Neurological Rehabilitation Unit has excellent outcomes for this cohort of patients and decannulation rates have improved to a level comparable with national hyperacute units.

This role may not be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the planning, organisation, development, and implementation of complex educational training programmes and learning opportunities to facilitate service developments related to regional neurological rehabilitation services.

Enhance clinical competencies, promote evidence-based practice, and improve patient outcomes and experience through high-quality education and training. Utilise current experience to develop, lead, and deliver clinical, virtual, and classroom education in relation to the care of patients with neurological diagnoses. Act as a clinical and professional role model to maintain and develop exceptional standards of clinical care.

Working alongside other specialties and professional groups, there will be an expectation to promote and foster a culture of education and clinical development within the workforce. Act as a resource for advice and support to professional staff in other local and regional neurological rehabilitation services.

You will be responsible for the planning, organisation, development, and implementation of complex educational training programmes and learning opportunities to facilitate service developments related to regional neurological rehabilitation services. This role is key to ensuring that excellent standards of care are consistently maintained.

All staff are expected to be able and willing to work across a 7-day service.

Responsibility for People Management

Take responsibility for own personal and professional development, maintain competence, knowledge, and skills commensurate with the role.

Support colleagues as a practice supervisor or support those completing the Preceptorship programme, including acting as a Preceptor in line with Livewell SW's Preceptorship Guidance document.

Be responsible for the continuing assessment of performance and the identification of development needs of team members by:

  • Facilitating staff members to meet revalidation requirements.
  • Actively participating in the collation of forecast demands for continuous professional development.
  • Participating in providing instruction, learning opportunities, experience, and training to health and social care staff and students, including those from other Livewell services, other neuro services across the region, professional disciplines, and colleges. Providing advice, specific training, guidance, the ability to reflect on professional and ethical issues, and signposting where appropriate.
  • Monitoring standards, ensuring staff are aware of and follow professional, national, and local standards in partnership with clinical, practice, and professional leads.
  • Providing professional clinical support to the MDT team and advising on practice, identifying training needs of staff and encouraging practitioners to develop skills in critical thinking and reflective practice, excellence in practice, specialist knowledge, and research-based practice.
  • Acting as a role model for all team members demonstrating and maintaining high standards of practice and professional conduct. Addressing issues of poor practice with senior line management and HR.
  • Supporting with student placement and training in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff or students.
  • Receiving line management support and supervision.
  • Assisting team leads with the recruitment process of junior staff e.g. taking part in interview panels, induction process, and engaging with preceptorship programmes.

Responsibility for financial and/or physical resources

The post holder will have no direct responsibility for finances; however, they will adhere to the relevant trust policies on financial issues.

The post holder will use Livewell Southwest resources responsibly ensuring that resources are utilised effectively to meet changing service needs.

Report accidents, incidents, or complaints following LSW procedures and policies and comply with the most recent health and safety at work Act.

Ensure all equipment and relevant clinical stock is accounted for, maintained, used effectively and efficiently with risk assessments and appropriate training completed.

Ensure new or replacement equipment is not used by self or staff until it has been commissioned in accordance with Livewell SW policy. Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Livewell SW procedures.

Responsible for ensuring safe, appropriate, and cost-effective/optimised use of educational resources.

Responsibility for administration

Take a lead role in audit, research, and interdisciplinary development within the service.

Maintain an accurate diary of visits/travel across the region and submit completed travel and special duty claim forms monthly.

Report accidents, incidents, or complaints following LSW procedures and policies and comply with the most recent Health and Safety at Work Act.

Attend and contribute to relevant team/service meetings.

Access and respond to work-related emails and other information on a regular basis through Livewell Southwest intranet.

Support Patient Safety Incident Investigations, after action reviews, case reviews, and incidents, providing feedback as required to staff, patients, and relatives.

Create and maintain up-to-date records of work undertaken, action plans, spreadsheets, and any other administrative activities required for the role and provide reports on areas of achievement and activities to senior managers/forums.

Develop effective working partnerships with key stakeholders.

Lead on the implementation and management of evaluation audits to measure the impact of educational programmes and disseminate the results.

Guide and lead the staff by using blended educational techniques, exercising judgement in delivering complex practical and theoretical teaching. This will require the analysis and interpretation of a range of options.

Guide and support learners to identify opportunities for maintaining and improving standards of patient care across all aspects of the patients' journey.

Act as an effective role model by demonstrating specialist expertise in own practice and support others to identify and deliver best practice.

Undertake comprehensive risk assessments in relation to educational needs of all situations associated with the care of patients to ensure own and others' safety.

Deliver the highly specialist clinical needs required for the post, through established experience/specialist postgraduate training.

Through negotiation with the Assistant Directorate Manager and service managers undertake any other duties or projects which require specialist input, or professional development as considered appropriate.
