Job overview

This is an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic Clinical Fellow interested in pursuing a career in Acute Medicine & Infection. The post holder will work within the Acute Medical Department and the Infection Diseases Department, rotating on a monthly basis.

The post will provide comprehensive training in Infection, individualized to the skills and level of previous Infection experience of the successful candidate, as well as a broad exposure to the assessment and follow-up of medical patients in the Acute Medicine Department.

The successful candidates will work alongside the Specialist Trainee in Infection and the Infection Consultants during their months with the Infection team, while the Acute Care Unit (ACU) is led by General Medicine Consultants alongside a dedicated junior doctor and nursing team. Working with both the Infection & ACU teams in one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in the UK will offer the Clinical Fellows a wide range of experience in the detailed interpretation of microbiology laboratory results, management of infectious & tropical diseases in both inpatients & ACU patients, and the ambulatory investigation & management of a stimulating variety of medical patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants should possess full GMC registration. The Trust operates flexible working and job share policies. This post is full-time (40hrs per week), but LTFT applicants will be considered.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to work closely with highly skilled and knowledgeable consultants with opportunities to work in a service where quality improvement and iterative change are happening in a real-time but supported way.

Person specification

Education & Higher qualifications

Essential criteria

  1. MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  2. Full GMC registration
  3. Permission to work in the UK (i.e. appropriate visa and/or work permit)
  4. Evidence of successful completion of Foundation year 1 & 2 or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  1. Evidence of completion of CMT or equivalent
  2. MRCP Part 1
  3. MRCEM part A (or equivalent)
  4. FRCPath Part 1
  5. Other related qualifications: e.g. Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MSc in Microbiology, Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

  1. At least 6 months experience in General or Acute Medicine at FY2 level including participation in unselected take.
  2. Experience of General Surgical specialties, including participation in unselected take, at FY1 or equivalent level.
  3. Clinical Knowledge and expertise: appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgements to problems
  4. Knowledge of evidence-based practice.

Desirable criteria

  1. 6 months experience at ST (IMT) 1 and above
  2. Experience of Microbiology & Infection or clinical specialties where there is a significant component of infection e.g. ITU/HDU
  3. Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to medical microbiology
  4. Experience of Emergency medicine, Acute Medicine or Ambulatory Care.
  5. 2 years clinical NHS experience

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria

  1. Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively
  2. Good organisational skills e.g. organise ward rounds
  3. Ability to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach
  4. Competent IT skills including Word & experience of using hospital computer systems (e.g. EPR, PACS, order communication system etc.)

Desirable criteria

  1. Previous experience using WinPath IT systems
  2. Relevant procedural skills

Management

Essential criteria

  1. Good understanding of clinical governance
  2. Good understanding of audit principles

Desirable criteria

  1. Demonstrable evidence in clinical governance
  2. Audit project completions

Teaching & Research

Essential criteria

  1. Good understanding of research principles
