This appointment is an excellent opportunity for physician trainees aiming to gain experience in Infectious Diseases (ID). A suitable candidate would have recently completed (or be expected to complete prior to the start date) F2 training (or equivalent) and be available to start on the dates stated above (6 August 2025 to 3 Feb 2026 or 4 Feb 2026 to 4 August 2026).

The primary role of the post holder is to provide clinical care for patients on the ID ward at St Thomas' Hospital. You will work alongside and be supported by an F1, an ID ST3+ and an ID/GIM consultant to care for patients with a mixture of infectious diseases and general medical conditions.

We are also an airborne High Consequence Infectious Diseases Centre (HCID). The post holder would have opportunities to undertake training and support this service in the case of an admission. We are an unusual infectious diseases unit in our very close working with microbiology, virology and infection prevention and control. You'll attend weekly clinical case meetings and help train junior staff. This role is ideal for those interested in infectious diseases, microbiology, virology, research, or medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the Infectious Diseases team based at the St Thomas' Hospital site. It is a requirement of your employment that you will be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, either on an ongoing or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

The Post:

You will support an inpatient ID service, working to care for patients with a mixture of infectious diseases and general medical conditions. You would be expected to attend/present to the weekly academic infection meetings, the weekly clinical case meeting and a biweekly ID virtual round. You will attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, staff training, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc. All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal. You will be allocated an education supervisor, clinical supervisor and responsible officer. You will contribute to the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her. All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity.

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements. All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines. This post is a very short post and as such immediate availability is required.

About Us

The role is within the Infection Directorate. This incorporates the overlapping services of Clinical Infectious Diseases (delivered by the full range of Infection specialists) and Infection Prevention and Control. Its research functions are undertaken with the Centre for Clinical Infectious Disease and Diagnostics Research (CIDR) facility co-located with the Directorate of Infection staff. A team of Infectious Diseases/General Internal Medicine (ID/GIM) consultants within the dept of Clinical Infectious Diseases between them run the ID/GIM ward, Hillyers ward, as well as part of the Infection clinical consult service (St Thomas' ID consults).
