Job summary

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (Bristol site) seeks applicants for Clinical Education Fellows in Paediatrics to commence in August (or September) 2025 for one year.

These posts provide an ideal opportunity for the successful candidates to work in a busy inner city tertiary children's hospital and be part of the Postgraduate Medical Education Faculty and the Undergraduate Teaching Academy, part of University of Bristol.

These posts are suitable for doctors who have completed foundation training or more senior trainees who are looking for a new challenge for a year. Successful candidates will be actively involved in a personalised post aimed at developing the candidate's skills and interests.

Post Type: There are two different types of post comprising clinical service in one of the following areas (apply separately).
  1. Education Fellow in Paediatric Medicine - (1 or 2 posts) - (1 in 10 shift rota - appropriate for trainees ST3+) 50:50 Clinical Paediatrics: Education
  2. Education fellow in Paediatric Surgery (1 in 8 shift rota F2-ST3 rota - appropriate for trainees F2+) 50:50 Clinical Paediatric Surgery:Education
  3. Education fellow in Paediatric Orthopaedics (no out of hours rota commitment - appropriate for trainees F2+) 50:50 Clinical Paediatric Orthopaedics:Education

Main duties of the job

These posts include opportunities for organising and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and research. There will be opportunity to teach medical students regularly including in the Bristol Medical Simulation Centre. Since these Education Fellow posts in Paediatrics were introduced 6 years ago we have established a successful track record in posters, national presentations and publications. Each successful candidate will be allocated an educational supervisor.

The posts also include home fees paid to study for a Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Bristol's Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals (TLHP) department. This qualification is completed in the year of the post. Opportunities are available in quality improvement and clinical governance.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
  • No unexplained career gaps
  • At least 12 months' experience (at FY1/2 level) in appropriate posts
  • Evidence of achievement of FY1/2 competencies
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Completed FY1/2 successfully in appropriate posts
Desirable

  • MRCPCH (Paediatric Medicine)
  • ST1-3 training completed (Paediatric Medicine)
Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & awareness to full investigation of problems
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including (all E): Good clinical care/ Maintaining good medical practice/ Good relationships and communication with patients/ Good working relationships with colleagues/ Good teaching and training/ Professional behaviour and probity/ Delivery of good acute clinical care
  • Evidence of experience and enthusiasm for teaching
Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following (all E): that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or have the following scores in the academic lnternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6. However, if applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
