We have an exciting opportunity for a new Clinical Director of Gastroenterology to join us!

Main duties of the job

The purpose is to provide clinical leadership and support to the Chief Medical Officer in overseeing the Gastroenterology Service across CHEC, including providing perspectives improving clinical pathways and programmes that deliver improvements in quality and patient care. The successful candidate will be responsible for the operational performance and strategic development of the gastroenterology service. This will include accountability for high quality patient care, patient safety, clinical quality and governance, the delivery of agreed performance and financial objectives, and ensuring that the service operates with the needs of patients as its highest priority. The role holder will also be responsible for undertaking direct clinical work in the gastroenterology service by providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients within the gastroenterology pathway.

Job responsibilities
  1. Review existing practices and ensure that continuous improvement, which considers models of best practice and best use of resources, are incorporated into plans.
  2. Work closely with the Director of Operations and Chief Medical Officer to ensure delivery plans are compatible, that activities across the service are appropriately coordinated and integrated, and that opportunities for more efficient and effective ways of working are fully realised.
  3. Constantly review the performance of the service and ensure that it meets all service delivery targets.
  4. Actively explore and implement opportunities for cost improvement.
  5. Lead the development of the research and audit strategies and implementation plans within the gastroenterology services.
  6. Lead the team in CQC readiness, improvement plans, and provide advice when required and maintain adherence to CQC standards and regulations.
  7. Regularly review Key Performance Indicators for the service and for individual clinicians.
  8. Design and contribute to the annual audit programme.
  9. Take a key lead in JAG accreditation of all endoscopy sites.
  10. Involvement in the creation and review of policies and standard operating procedures relevant to the service.
  11. Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients within the gastroenterology pathway.
  12. Perform a range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures in accordance with established protocols and guidelines.
  13. Conduct thorough pre-procedure assessments and obtain informed consent from patients.
  14. Interpret findings accurately and provide timely feedback to patients, referring physicians and healthcare teams as required.
  15. Ensure doctors in the service participate in the appraisal process and contribute to the appraisal system.
  16. Involvement in recruitment of permanent and sessional clinicians in line with the company's HR processes.
  17. Ensure that clinicians maintain a fitness to practice.
Person Specification
Experience
  • Full GMC Registration, with licence to practice.
  • Extensive experience as a Consultant Gastroenterologist.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to develop and implement clinical strategies in line with organisational objectives.
  • Experience in service improvement.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the diagnosis and management of gastroenterology conditions.
  • Proven leadership experience within a healthcare setting, with a track record of successfully leading and managing teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels, including clinicians, management, and patients.
