Clerk of Works

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clerk of Works to join the Capital Planning and Development Team.

The role is ideally suited for an existing Clerk of Works or someone wanting to move into a Clerk of Works role. This position would be ideal for someone with extensive on-site practical experience, Construction Site Managers, Building Surveyors, and Building Inspectors or those with equivalent experience in a similar role who could adapt their skills to this challenging new role.

You will be an experienced and dedicated individual who has past experience of being involved with and on active construction sites, ideally in a healthcare environment.

You will have experience of working as part of a team, ideally in the healthcare construction industry. You will have good communication skills and be ready for the challenge of delivering the Trust's ambitious capital improvement programme.

Attention to detail and good communication is a key skill of a Clerk of Works. You will therefore need to have a good level of written, computer and verbal skills, be comfortable attending meetings and be personable to both maintain and develop relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external.

Above all else, you must recognise that all the projects we deliver ultimately impact our patients, be it directly or indirectly, therefore, care and attention to detail is paramount to ensure health and safety standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Engineering Development Manager within the Capital Planning and Development Team, this is a fundamental role to deliver a quality control, quality checks and health and safety inspection service.

Responsible for monitoring, examining and keeping accurate records of works carried out by contractors on both major and minor schemes in properties owned or controlled by Cambridge University Hospitals.

Works predominantly limited to the CUH campus, but there may be a requirement to visit manufacturer's factories / yards.

Responsible for completing or assisting in completing all relevant documents relating to the standards of work and the resources used by a contractor at all stages of a project and bringing to the attention of the appropriate Senior Managers, issues of importance or potential concern.

Expected to take responsibility for all aspects of health and safety such as evaluation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), policies and procedures prior to the commencement and during the delivery of a project they have been assigned to.

Monitor the quality of work undertaken in relation to the Quality Standards set for a project with an appropriate level of understanding of work procedures and practices underpinned with knowledge and understanding of the construction industry.

Job responsibilities

You will join an existing Clerk of Works, working as a small team on all major capital projects. Over recent years, the wider team has successfully delivered a range of capital schemes including Ward refurbishments, new Operating Theatres, replacement scanners and Linear Accelerators. Your role within the team will be to ensure the safe and high-quality onsite project delivery and work alongside the Trust's existing Clerk of Works working on multiple projects which have starting values above £50k and can range up to £4m.

Qualifications

Essential

• Qualified to NVQ level 4 in Construction or other relevant qualifications
• A building qualification is desirable however, relevant experience of building construction or refurbishment could be considered
• A Health and Safety Professional Qualification

Desirable

• A member of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI)
• NEBOSH General and/or Construction Certificate (or equivalent qualification)

Experience

Essential

• Previous Clerk of Works experience preferably in acute hospital environment working in both clinical and non-clinical areas

Knowledge

Essential

• Technical knowledge of: British Standards, Fire code, BMS systems and the Health and Safety at Work Act
• Working knowledge of Building Regulations and other appropriate legislation (e.g. DDA)
• Comprehensive overview of the Building industry
• An understanding of web-based technology and the ability to use it

Desirable

• Technical knowledge of HTMs and HBNs
• Good working knowledge of a broad range of clinical practices and procedures
