Job description

Are you purpose-led and ready to embark on a journey to help drive demand for cotton that is produced in a way that protects and restores the environment, and improves the livelihoods of cotton-farming communities? Join us at Better Cotton as Claims & Labelling Coordinator for the world’s largest cotton sustainability initiative – we support the implementation of more sustainable farming practices and farm livelihoods through our voluntary standard for nearly 3 million farmers in the Better Cotton network in 23 countries around the world.

The Challenge

Looking ahead to 2030, we are targeting reducing GHG emissions from cotton production by half, big cuts in synthetic pesticide use, improved soil health across our network, improved farm income and supported women’s empowerment among farmers and farm workers.

To do so, we also need to drive demand for cotton that is produced by farmers and production units that adhere to our farm-level standard, the Principles & Criteria. An integral component of the Better Cotton Standard System, our Claims Framework and accompanying guidance is the tool that members, certified organisations and relevant stakeholders use to communicate and report on their involvement with the Better Cotton Standard System.

As the Claims & Labelling Coordinator, you will join our Claims team, which is part of the broader Standards System Integrity function. You will be responsible for coordinating the development of our Claims Framework and accompanying labelling requirements with a direct reporting line to the Claims team lead.

Your roles and responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

Claims Framework Development:

Coordinating the process of revising and updating the Claims Framework. Responsibilities include:

  1. Coordinating the overall project management of any necessary or required revisions and updates to the Claims Framework and accompanying labelling guidance;
  2. Working with external legal counsel to ensure our claims, label, requirements and processes adhere to regulatory and legal requirements for Sustainability Claims & Labels in main jurisdictions of operation;
  3. Liaising with members of our Standards team to ensure our Claims Framework adheres to any applicable ISEAL requirements for claims and input into any required documentation such as self-assessments and benchmarking to support this process;
  4. Conducting public consultations to ensure the Claims Framework and labelling guidance remains relevant and effective which includes coordinating internal and external public consultations including retailer and brand member-specific sessions;
  5. Monitoring the effectiveness of the Claims Framework and its requirements based on established feedback loops and market intelligence and identifying areas for improvement, ensuring our claims and label remain an effective tool for driving demand for sustainable cotton;
  6. Engaging and working with consultants or other standards, as appropriate, on claims-related topics and performing benchmarking activities as needed.

Claims Framework Implementation:

Working closely with our Supply Chain Operations, Engagement and Communications teams, the Claims & Labelling Coordinator will support internal teams with the effective implementation of the Claims Framework and accompanying labelling guidance with our members and certified organisations. Responsibilities include:

  1. Preparing & delivery of internal trainings and masterclasses on claims-related topics as well as resources for external audiences;
  2. Assist with the development of an organisational approach to Sustainability Claims more generally and support other internal teams on project-related claims, as necessary;
  3. Any other relevant tasks as agreed with their line manager.

We are looking for someone who has

the following skills, knowledge, and experience:

  1. Experience with Sustainability Communications, Marketing and Claims and establishing effective guidance, requirements and monitoring controls for credibly doing so. Preferably in the textile industry.
  2. Understanding of legal requirements and market needs for sustainability claims both for retailers and brands (B2C) as well as supply chain organisations (B2B).
  3. Proven understanding and/or experience with Voluntary Standards Systems.
  4. Effective multi-stakeholder management and coordination skills: Ability to facilitate alignment and consensus among diverse opinions and stakeholders.
  5. Strong project management skills: Capable of coordinating complex projects and managing deadlines and competing priorities effectively.
