Your new role
We are looking for an experienced Civil Engineer to join the Highways & Coastal - Project Delivery team on a full-time and permanent basis. This contract is offered on a hybrid basis, which is a combination of attending office, working from home and regular site visits (as and when required). This post is within the Project Delivery Team (Highways & Coastal) responsible for Highway Design, Traffic Management/Regulations, Road Safety, Structures, Flood Risk and Coastal Protection.
As a civil engineer, you will lead and support senior engineers with the technical execution of design and engineering activities on a variety of engineering projects, including feasibility studies, consultations, site inspections, surveys, contract administration duties, reporting and technical queries. You will ensure the successful integrated delivery of projects by working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment, including health and safety, sustainability, environment and planning to achieve integrated designs/solutions.
You will prepare and design allocated elements of contract documents for various civil engineering schemes with minimal supervision using appropriate national design codes and standards such as DMRB, MfS, MCHW, IANs, HPNs, TSRGD, Traffic Sign Manuals & relevant FCERM documentation.
You will support the senior engineer with assessing and providing comment to planning applications in relation to highway impact, contributing to and supporting work regarding s278 and s106 agreements.


What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, it is essential that you have working knowledge and experience of a range of relevant engineering or service techniques and procedures. Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective internal and external working relationships is crucial for this role. It is essential that you can provide timely and accurate advice to senior leaders/members/local councillors and the public on all highway, flooding and coastal related matters.
Your application will not be considered if you do not have one of the following:

  1. Degree or HNC in civil engineering / highways / related discipline.
  2. Membership of (or working towards) a professional body and 5+ years' experience.
  3. Equivalent knowledge and experience of working within at least one relevant field (Highways Design/Maintenance, Traffic Management, Road Safety or Parking).
