Job description

We have invested in a new post within the aseptic service department. We are looking for an experienced leader who has experience in managing an aseptic unit and who thrives on leading big teams to deliver an outstanding service to our patients.


Building on your previous experience working in the field of pharmacy aseptic production at a unit lead level, you will manage the operational delivery of technical aseptics of the TPN and Civas unit, supporting the development and management of all aspects of the MHRA licensed aseptic production services and work closely with the pharmacy Quality Assurance and Production teams to ensure that all production services are delivered in accordance with GMP. You will lead on the education and training of all technical and support staff, including apprenticeships, science manufacturing qualifications, NVQ qualifications, and post qualifications.


The UCLH pharmacy aseptic production service holds a MHRA MS licence and includes aseptic units for chemotherapy and CIVAS/PN. The cytotoxic unit dispenses > 50,000 doses per annum of which 20% are for clinical trials. The CIVAS/PN service dispenses > 8000 PN bags and > 12000 CIVAS doses each year.


Main duties of the job

You will be an experienced and dynamic individual with demonstrable aseptic unit management and leadership qualities, and the desire and ability to deliver high quality pharmacy aseptic production service to patients at UCLH. You will have significant service and staff management experience, GPHC registration as a pharmacy technician or other appropriate aseptic services registration experience of dealing with the MHRA and/or other external auditing agencies. Excellent leadership, communication and negotiation skills, the ability to deliver and work as an integral part of the pharmacy production team, well-developed team working and communication skills, and an enthusiastic, flexible and professional approach are all essential.


  • Deputise in all technical areas of management for the Operational Manager Aseptic services
  • Provide technical leadership, management and development for the TPN and Civas Units
  • Lead on the education and training of all technical and support staff, including apprenticeships, science manufacturing qualifications, NVQ qualifications and post qualifications.
  • To lead and support the establishment of a high quality, appropriately skilled and motivated pharmacy production TPN and CIVAS service
  • To support on patient and clinical team engagement across pharmacy aseptic services
  • To be responsible for all technical aspects of the aseptic chemotherapy manufacturing service and to ensure all products are made to the highest quality, enforced by GMP and QA systems.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
  • NVQ Pharmacy Services Level 3 plus an accredited underpinning knowledge or BTEC Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent relevant science degree.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council or other appropriate registration.

Desirable
  • Specialist Qualification in Pharmaceutical Technical Services, e.g. PTQA MSc or equivalent experience and expertise.

Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrable significant post registration work in hospital pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrable significant experience of aseptic manufacture (Chemotherapy, CIVAS and PN).
  • Demonstrable experience of managing/leading an aseptic service.
  • Experience of dealing with MHRA and/or other external auditing agencies.
  • Experience of service management including managing human resources issues, e.g. Sickness, disciplinary.

Desirable
  • Previous assessable experience in the design, building and commissioning of new production facilities.
  • Previous assessable experience of budget management.

Skills and Abilities
Essential
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of GMP and QA and a proven ability to apply this knowledge to maintain a production quality system.
  • Demonstrated accurate numeracy skills, without using a calculator.
  • Flexibility with regard to changes in work schedules.

  • Demonstrable ability to lead and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Able to communicate complex, contentious and sensitive information effectively when using clear written and spoken English.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage load handling issues and ensure manual handling risk assessments for all activities within production.

Specific Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake validated aseptic manipulation requiring fine and accurate motor skills and concentration.
  • Ability to work at a laminar flow cabinet or isolator for periods of the working time.
