Job description

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Vessel Master, the Chief Officer is responsible for overseeing the safe and effective operation, administration, and supervision of deck activities and personnel. This role also includes maintaining a secure navigational watch and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Act as the Safety Officer, ensuring the safety of all personnel and the vessel, efficient operations, and adherence to pollution prevention measures.
  2. Maintain a safe and effective navigational watch.
  3. Oversee the upkeep and functionality of life-saving and fire-fighting equipment.
  4. Implement company health, safety, environmental, and quality policies.
  5. Report any defects, hazards, incidents, or accidents to the Master.
  6. Plan and document deck activities, including mooring equipment inspections.
  7. Allocate and supervise daily tasks for the deck crew, offering support to other departments when needed.
  8. Conduct deck operations efficiently and safely.
  9. Manage and control inventory of mooring equipment aboard the vessel.
  10. Review and update contingency plans, risk assessments, and operational procedures.
  11. Ensure all nautical publications and charts are current.
  12. Prepare the vessel for statutory surveys and ensure it remains in a seaworthy condition.

Candidate Requirements:

  1. Practical experience in a similar role aboard a vessel.
  2. Valid Officer of the Watch Deck II/1 certification.
  3. Advanced fire prevention and firefighting training.
  4. Strong seamanship skills and familiarity with deck operations.
  5. Certification in personal survival techniques.
  6. Proficiency in handling survival craft and rescue boats.
  7. GMDSS Radio Operator Certificate.
  8. Radar and ARPA qualifications.
