We have an exciting opportunity for a Solution Development Engineer (chemical process) to join us in the Chemical Process team and be a part of helping us give the very best service to our customers. Could this be you?

What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment, and changing expectations from customers mean that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. This Engineering role is a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

The Company is organised into operating divisions for clean and wastewater. Alongside these is asset delivery, a business unit that serves both clean and waste, providing new and improved assets and a wide range of engineering functions from engineering design, legislative compliance to maintenance strategy.

The chemical process team sits within asset delivery and consists of a principal engineer for the discipline and a small group of chemical engineers. We manage DSEAR and COSHH compliance for the business and as part of this, we have a significant capital programme for asset remediation involving a comprehensive site inspection regime, from which springs the compliance documentation and remediation plans. We perform the process design for this remedial work and then generally employ our specialist projects team to complete it. Other activities include creating/maintaining/policing the Yorkshire Water Engineering Specification and authorising engineers from partner organisations to perform specialist work on our behalf.

Where you fit in:

  • Carry out and review DSEAR risk assessments, Hazardous Area Classifications and COSHH Risk Assessments
  • Technically define scopes of work to enable investigation in support of legislative compliance, particularly DSEAR and COSHH
  • Critically appraise output from partners prior to document acceptance and actively engage with them to drive performance and standards
  • Assess remedial requirements and provide cost effective process design intent specifications
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the internal project delivery team
  • Support the discipline Principal Engineer in the development of the Yorkshire Water Engineering Specification and interpretation of industry/national codes

What skills & qualifications you’ll need:

  • Chemical Engineering degree
  • Previous chemical process engineering experience within a process-related engineering operation
  • Capable of developing and writing clear and concise engineering standards and specifications
  • Commercially aware and able to balance risk and value
  • Previous experience of developing process engineering solutions and incorporating these into a work specification for delivery
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present highly technical concepts to a wide audience, not always within the engineering community
  • Fit and able to perform medium risk confined space entry and working at height (training provided)

You will also benefit from having:

  • Training and experience in Hazardous Area Classification
  • Training and experience in leading hazard studies
  • Competence with drawing creation using AutoCAD

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s really important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life. We know that juggling childcare responsibilities or getting that ideal work/life balance isn’t always easy!

Do we sound like your cup of tea?
