CDM Principal Designer - Central London - Fantastic Benefits - Hybrid - Competitive Salary Offered

We are currently working with a well-established international engineering design consultancy that is leading the way in sustainable design within the built environment and energy transition sector.

Due to several recent increases in workload, we are looking for an experienced CDM Principal Designer to join a very well-established and highly successful consultancy that is a market leader.

Role Responsibilities

The Principal Designer's role is to plan, manage, and monitor the Pre-Construction phase, to coordinate Health & Safety. The Principal Designer must:

  1. Fulfil the duties of the Principal Designer as defined under CDM 2015, including where necessary carrying out the role of CDM-Advisor to support the client.
  2. Ensure that multiple team members and duty holders such as the client, designers, contractors, and other internal multidisciplinary team members coordinate and cooperate with each other and check that relevant duties are complied with.
  3. Assist the client in identifying, obtaining, and collating the pre-construction information.
  4. Provide pre-construction information to designers, the principal contractor, and contractors.
  5. Ensure that designers comply with their duties and cooperate with each other.
  6. Assist the client in validating health & safety credentials of contractors.
  7. Undertake safety by design review workshops.
  8. Attend client meetings during all phases of the project and advise the client and design team on Health & Safety guidelines.
  9. Guide the Design team and client through Health & Safety requirements through all the relevant project phases including RIBA Stage.
  10. Organise design risk workshops and review designers' risk assessments.
  11. Liaise with client representatives, Principal Contractor, and contractors with respect to health and safety.
  12. Review Principal Contractor's information, including Construction Phase Health & Safety plan.
  13. Prepare the Health & Safety file.
  14. Submit F10 on behalf of the client.
  15. Undertake CDM site audits on behalf of the client.
  16. Undertake lessons learned workshops.
  17. Undertake audits.
  18. Review and identify surveys etc. required.
  19. Produce and issue fee schedule and be responsible for project reporting internally.
  20. Be responsible for internal project reporting on progress, close out, and supporting invoicing.
Role Requirements
  1. At least 5 years' experience in a similar role with a focus on Construction Design Management.
  2. Experience working on projects largely led by MEP services.
  3. Data Centre and/or large scale infrastructure project experience.
  4. ISO standard knowledge and experience beneficial.
  5. Stable career background.
  6. Knowledge of MEP building services would be useful.
  7. NEBOSH Diploma essential.
  8. Experience of construction site safety.
  9. Ideally to have experience of appropriate H&S procedures in an engineering consultancy environment in the construction sector and specifically relating to site visitors and professionals compared to contractors and site operatives.
  10. Ideally to have working knowledge and experience of the UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and their applicability to design consultants in the built environment.
  11. You understand risk assessment and mitigation methods and have the ability to identify the most effective techniques and tools to use.
  12. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral.
  13. Experience of having worked for an international consultancy (desirable).
  14. Sound knowledge & working application of key H&S issues and legislation.
  15. Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  16. Good understanding of British Standards.
  17. Ability to prioritise own workload and work to deadlines.
  18. Ability to manage multiple projects.
  19. Presentation and training skills.
  20. Fluent English speaker (essential) with other language skills (desirable).
  21. Chairing/facilitation of meeting skills.
  22. Knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical building systems preferred.
  23. Working knowledge of CDM, PUWER, COSHH, LOLER, MHSWR etc. Regulations.
  24. Ability to coordinate with designers and contractors.
  25. Delivery of contract and program management - managing contractors' progress, information, and document flow etc.
  26. Ability to use IT-based calculation and spreadsheet software.
  27. Act in an ethical manner and follow the principles of the Ethics Charter and Ethics in Practice Guidelines.
  28. Background in consulting or construction preferred.
  29. Good understanding of H&S within an international business/consultancy.
