Do you have an interest in the environment, water and agriculture? Do you enjoy working outdoors in the countryside, on farms and within water catchment areas? Would you like to combine these interests and promote sustainable land management practices across the picturesque region? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you to join our team as a Catchment Adviser!

What you'll do

As part of a small team of Catchment Advisers, your role is to identify and report catchment risks to water quality (groundwater and surface water) and advise how these risks can be mitigated as part of the Catchment Drinking Water Safety Plan (DWSP) team.

You will help mitigate these risks by working with and advising farmers/landowners across our region to ensure the water quality at our sources is excellent and improve the ecological status of local watercourses.

You will report these risks to the Operational Science and Production teams, maintaining a risk and compliance database.

You will also liaise with the Catchment Delivery team to enable prioritisation and targeted catchment management activity where required.

What you'll need

You will be an established agricultural/environment/catchment adviser with more than three years of experience in relevant roles with an enthusiasm for sustainable land management and risk reduction.

You will be self-sufficient, have a wealth of agricultural expertise and experience, and be an excellent communicator who is confident talking to and dealing with the farming community and other relevant stakeholders.

In addition, you will have a relevant degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in agriculture, environmental science, or a related discipline.

You will also have:
  1. knowledge of sustainable farming practices, especially soil/nutrient/manure management
  2. knowledge of environmental legislation and regulatory processes in agriculture and the water industry
  3. knowledge of agri-environment stewardship schemes
  4. strong communication skills including the ability to interact with external stakeholders and to work across internal teams
  5. the ability to write technical notes and reports; presenting data to a range of internal and external audiences
  6. strong negotiation skills
  7. effective time management with the ability to work well both in a team and by yourself
  8. the ability to work effectively in both an office environment and in the field
  9. FACTS (fertiliser) training, or the ability to achieve within two years of appointment
  10. an understanding of working in the environmental field
  11. an understanding of risk to groundwater and surface water quality from catchment land use and activity
  12. the ability to analyse and interpret water quality data
  13. the ability to use ArcGIS mapping system and interpret data sets
  14. a basic hydrogeological understanding
  15. a valid UK driving licence
