Job description

Positive Employment is currently recruiting for a Carpenter for our client, a local government organisation in Southampton. The successful candidate will carry out a range of construction and property maintenance activities within Southampton City boundary. An individual who has the ability to multi-task and can carry out small works in other trade disciplines will undertake the role of Carpenter within the organisation's Housing Operations team. They will be liaising with residents, peers, and colleagues on a daily basis, so communication and customer focus will be essential to the role. This is initially a 3-month contract with the possibility to extend after that date.

Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to:
  • Undertake fault finding/diagnosis and/or problem solving on-site to determine the scope of works required with considerable demand for both speed and precision of the proposed remedial actions in accordance with policies.
  • Produce a quality and quantity of work commensurate with that of an experienced and competent Carpenter with the ability to adapt and undertake a range of tasks outside of the initial core trade which will enable the task to be completed by a single visit wherever practicable. Task examples: Patch plaster / artex / rendering; Tiling; Floor Tiling; Excavations; Painting; Making good brickwork; Fencing; Concreting; Glazing / UPVC work; Minor plumbing; Plasterboard tacking; Soffits, Fascias and Guttering.
  • Provide reasonable estimates of time and materials (upon request) to complete tasks, orders, or projects within strict timescales.
  • Plan and measure work carefully to minimise waste.
  • Interpret design plans, drawings, specifications, and written instructions correctly.
  • Mentor and impart practical information, instruction, and training to apprentices, and/or trainees as appropriate and in accordance with locally agreed guidelines.
  • Undertake appropriate working across trades during peaks and troughs of demand and/or a surplus/shortfall of trade skills.
Personal Requirements:
  • Experience of working with UPVC installation and property maintenance would be an advantage; it is essential to have a practical understanding of the construction/property maintenance industry.
  • Have served a recognised apprenticeship to a Level 3 qualification in Wood Occupations or equivalent with 3 years’ experience of working in the domestic, commercial construction & maintenance environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and carry out small works in other trade disciplines, i.e., Painting and Decorating / Bricklaying / Plumbing / Plastering etc.
  • Current full UK driving licence in order to drive vehicles throughout the City.
  • Ability to use specialist tools, fault finding/analysing, and solving problems with precision and speed to meet strict deadlines whilst dealing with interruptions.
Working Hours:

37hrs / 7:30am - 16:15pm / Monday to Friday

Pay:

£23.25 per hour
