Main duties of the job

We are currently looking for a dynamic, motivated Cardiology Research Nurse who will take responsibility for the coordination and management of a cardiovascular clinical research portfolio linked to the National Institute for Health and Care Research Barts Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Barts BRC) as well as the interventional cardiology department. Currently, the focus is on novel medical devices and their implementation into clinical practice. The role will also involve the development of new digital technologies in healthcare innovation.

The Research Nurse is an independent practitioner working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Responsibilities will include the education of patients and colleagues, screening and recruitment, the coordination of care of patients on trials, the collection and preparation of biological samples, and the collection and input of data. The post holder will be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patient’s advocate.

They will co-ordinate the treatment pathway for patients on clinical trials and support the delivery of care for these patients by promoting greater collaboration amongst the health care professionals caring for this group of patients.

Person specification

Qualifications

1. Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
2. Intravenous accreditation
3. Teaching/mentorship course or equivalent
4. Possession of / or can demonstrate equivalence to an undergraduate degree in Nursing, Science or Health related discipline
5. Research qualification
6. Good Clinical Practice certification
7. ALS/ILS or equivalent

Experience

1. Experience in Cardiology or Cardiac/Critical care nursing for at least 1 year
2. Experience in clinical, organisational and team management
3. Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
4. Experience of explaining complex concepts to patients in a clear and simplified manner
5. Experience of formal/ informal teaching of patients and staff
6. Experience of managing physically and emotionally challenging patient cohorts and environments
7. Experience in Research Nursing in Clinical investigations or trials
8. Experience of clinical trial data entry on multiple platforms

Knowledge

1. Broad knowledge and experience of post registration nursing practice within an acute hospital environment
2. Evidence of continuous personal development
3. Knowledge and experience of Research Governance, EU Clinical Trials Directive, Directive 93/42/EEC on medical devices (EU MDD) and Good Clinical Practice
4. Basic statistical knowledge
5. Knowledge of Trials Research Management Software e.g. EDGE

Skills
