The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for Kitchen Assistant on a casual basis for our Camp location in Wellston, OK.

Job Summary

  1. Assists cook with preparing and serving nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules;
  2. Ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner;
  3. Cleans kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances;
  4. Maintains inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner;
  5. Assists in the daily operations of the camp food service by assisting in the preparations of food as the menu indicates including washing and peeling, and stores food and leftovers at proper temperatures;
  6. Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards;
  7. Cleans, cooks, and prepares a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils, and supplies;
  8. Serves food and beverages in a presentable manner; prepares plates for infants or persons requiring additional assistance;
  9. Assists in the preparation and packaging of food for use outside the camp dining hall;
  10. Prepares snacks and prepares plates of food for people eating after normal serving hours;
  11. Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room;
  12. Assists cook in clean up after meal preparation and service;
  13. Assists in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment;
  14. Sweeps and mops kitchen floor nightly;
  15. Keeps refrigerator clean and orderly, keeps stoves and ovens clean, and keeps grill clean;
  16. Keeps the daily log on refrigerator/freezer temperatures;
  17. Stores, refrigerates, and freezes foods in a safe and economical manner;
  18. Assists with food inventory as needed;
  19. Maintains proper supply and orderliness of kitchen stock inventory;
  20. Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs and special events;
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of proper cooking methods and procedures;
  2. Knowledge of meal planning techniques;
  3. Knowledge of acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques;
  4. Ability to cook nutritional, tasteful, and safe food for large groups in a timely manner;
  5. Ability to properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils;
  6. Ability to order food and kitchen supplies in an economical manner;
  7. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction;
  8. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques;
  9. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards;
  10. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid;
  11. Ability to meet attendance requirements;
  12. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language;
  13. Ability to cook, taste, and smell food.

Education and Experience

One year experience cooking food for large groups preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Certified in First Aid and CPR

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Some physical requirements include climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate and record appropriate camper activities. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
