Our client is a leading engineering and project services company who provide bespoke solutions across a number of marine related sectors. Due to growth they now require a Technical Buyer to join their busy North East facility.
The Role
- Responsible for managing and ensuring the purchasing of materials, services and/or equipment for the assigned purchasing category and project portfolio.
- Lead and participate in pre-bid process, pipeline discussions and meetings for technical commodities within the business.
- Lead and develop commodity strategies in collaboration with internal stakeholders, for the technical commodities within the business.
- Ability to read, understand technical drawings, specifications and to transfer these requirements from this information into RFQs, Purchase Orders and Framework Agreements.
- An understanding of a wide range of manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of grades of steel and the application of these grades (Mild Steel, British Zinc Plate and Stainless Steel).
- Wide knowledge of suppliers and their capabilities.
- Facilitate development of strategic partnerships with key suppliers. Develop risk/reward operating models and continuous improvement plans with key suppliers, as appropriate.
- Ensure value for money through the management of cost/risk by appropriate contracting methodology, terms and conditions and the use of appropriate supply chain procedures.
- Lead, manage and document sourcing meeting decisions within your commodities.
- Lead and co-ordinate negotiations on all major project procurement working with Supply Chain Manager as required on high value contracts.
- Ensure procurement of all equipment materials and services on assigned projects or non-project activities.
- Responsible for all procurement timing, budget vs actual cost control with Project Manager.
- Interface with Design Engineers, Project personnel and all stakeholders on potential and current requirements.
- Co-ordinate all active projects and non-project requirements daily with the team.
- Manage and ensure supplier relationships are maintained within the order placement life cycle.
- Work with the Category Management group, ensuring sourcing recommendations are implemented where possible.
- Implement financial risk mitigation methodologies through use of appropriate contracting tools to de-risk project awards.
The Person
- Purchasing experience within a manufacturing or project-based offshore environment.
- Experience of development and implementation of supply chain strategies.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and multiple project assignments.
- Excellent inter-personal skills to form effective relationships internally and externally.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills and report writing.
- Excellent negotiator – externally and within the business. Demonstrates good commercial acumen.
- Strong PC skills (Microsoft Office, MS PowerPoint).
- Commercially astute with sound knowledge of contracting and commercial principles.
- Good decision maker with ability to summarize complex points concisely.
- Communication skills appropriate to all stakeholders.
- Driven can act on own initiative and lead others when required.
- Able to travel UK and Internationally when required (able to take short term assignments).
- MCIPS qualified and/or degree in business or related discipline.
- Purchasing experience within a high technology, engineering based, project environment.
- Relevant experience in one of the following disciplines, Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical, Machining or Fabrication would be advantageous.
