Main duties of the job
Working within a small friendly team, you will support the Assistant Director overseeing a team performing a variety of business intelligence, data science, and information-related tasks. These include reviewing and maintaining the NIHR Academy data warehouse, providing information in response to parliamentary questions, providing innovative data science solutions, and developing dashboards and analytics to support the NIHR demonstrating the difference it makes.
Main duties will include providing leadership and technical expertise to the BI functions working with relational databases with MS SQL server and ETL tools such as SSIS. You will provide advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of BI Architecture including Extract, Transform and Load (ETL), SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Data Warehousing, data science methodologies, and Data Modelling.
You will oversee the production of reports and data visualisation in Qlik or Tableau using a variety of data sources to meet business needs. Our current data warehouse is in the cloud; therefore, experience of Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS may also be beneficial.

Specialist Programme Expertise and Leadership
- Support the Assistant Director for Evaluation, Business Intelligence, and Impact in leading the development and operation of the organisations Business Intelligence Information and data systems, developing and testing systems for the organisation to access data and information, ensuring alignment with overall NIHR initiatives and approach.
- Work with the Assistant Director - Evaluation, Business Intelligence, and Impact and take a key role in identifying approaches for Business Intelligence system solutions, data visualisations, and analytics while implementing national strategic developments.
- Provide specialist knowledge of BI Architecture including Extract, Transform and Load (ETL), SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Data Warehousing, and Data Modelling.
- Provide reports to an agreed standard to meet the requirements of NIHR Academy Executive Board.
- Assist the Assistant Director for Evaluation, Business Intelligence, and Impact with the preparation of reports and papers for strategic and policy meetings and publication.
- Evaluate outputs, formulate, and present highly complex ideas of future reporting developments.
- Apply specialist knowledge of BI solutions for non-routine enquiries.

- Review, manage, and lead the development of methods of collection and analysis of data to ensure accuracy of sources and data resilience.
- Monitor data quality standards by collating data produced from data quality reports and other control procedures. Assist with data cleaning exercises, data extracts, and supply processes.
Communications and Engagement- Identify and understand the business needs, prioritise, and implement Business Intelligence tools, policies, and processes to meet those needs.
- Work with the Assistant Director for Evaluation, Business Intelligence, and Impact to identify data streams which will inform the ongoing development of BI procedures and support the strategic direction for NIHR Academy.
- Maintain regular liaison with Business Intelligence Analysts across NIHR and keep the NIHR Academy Executive Board informed of work progress or any issues.
- Train NIHR Academy's programme management staff in the most effective use of the design functionality within data visualisation tools such as QlikView or QlikSense.
- Liaise with the Information Systems team to achieve best practice and improved ways of working.
- Work with the Assistant Director for Evaluation, Business Intelligence, and Impact to take a leading role for developing and communicating highly complex and sensitive information relating to business intelligence developments, information requirements, and research evidence in line with new national initiatives.
- Liaise with other national NIHR programmes, wider NIHR, Department of Health and Social Care staff, other key funders of health and social care research, and the academic community as necessary.
- Deliver presentations to NIHR stakeholder groups, internal and external.
- Work closely with the wider NIHR Academy Evaluation and Impact team to ensure that they have sufficient data and tools to be able to respond quickly to Information Requests and long-term Analysis.
Technical- Provide specialist knowledge across a wide range of BI tools supporting ETL, Data Warehousing, Modelling, Dashboards, and Reporting.
- Be/Act as the domain expert and understand what information can be accessed and how this is achieved.
- Use specialist knowledge of data flows and source data, providing advice on how information should be managed, focusing on data quality.
- Ensure the NIHR Academy Executive is up to date with developments in appropriate technologies.
- Plan and implement projects appropriate to the role.
Information Resources- Co-ordinate production of analysis, publications, datasets, documentation, and briefing.
- Design and develop automated reporting processes to gain maximum benefits from using reporting and analysis software.
- Provide Technical Configuration for the SQL and QlikView Servers, including Security and Access roles, Service support, Scheduling, Version Control, Licensing, and Server update.
- Propose, implement, and test information systems and data analytical services for NIHR Academy.
- Ensure NIHR Academy meets national information governance guidelines by having specialist knowledge of GDPR and data confidentiality laws.
