Job description

Business Development Manager - Rail at Tended

About Tended

At Tended, we create first-of-a-kind safety systems that use some of the most advanced technologies on the market to transform rail worker safety. Our flagship geofencing solution has been named as one of TIME’s Best Inventions 2023 and has made it onto the Digital Leaders 100 list for Geospatial Initiative of the Year 2023.

We're a venture-backed scale-up with an incredible team innovating alongside industry-leading organisations in the rail sector. Our mission is ensuring friends and family can return home safe every day from work. We put our people first, offering flexible and remote working, comprehensive mental health policies, and regular social activities.

Tended is growing quickly and we're now looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to drive the growth of our technology by identifying new opportunities and securing new deployments across the UK and beyond.

Why are we hiring a Business Development Manager?

We’re now looking to build on our strong position and scale up our footprint across Network Rail, principal contractors and international rail markets. We’re looking to hire an experienced enterprise salesperson to join our existing sales team. You’ll rapidly drive sustainable revenue growth, gain an in-depth understanding of client challenges and help them adopt our technology that is set to change the safety industry forever.

You can expect to play a significant role in the development of strategy, being the voice of the customer within Tended, and helping us to continually innovate and improve.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for someone with a passion in safety and technology, ideally with the experience of working in the railway or construction industries. You’ll know how to successfully implement a technology driven initiative, with a demonstrable record of being an excellent relationship builder, establishing and navigating commercial relationships with large, complex enterprises.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely curious, empathetic and driven every day to improve. You’ll be a natural collaborator and problem-solver, finding it easy to steer complex organisations and decision-making processes to identify and qualify opportunities, map stakeholders and risks to close a sales deal.

You will also balance a winning mentality with the strong ethical focus of a safety-oriented organisation. We would expect you to challenge assumptions and passionately communicate our vision, proposition and values.

Responsibilities

  • Generate new business and relationships through targeted prospecting, industry events, and strategic engagement within the rail sector
  • Expand relationships with existing customers by identifying new applications and opportunities for geofencing
  • Create compelling business cases and influence senior decision makers to secure budget commitments for enterprise-wide technology adoption
  • Develop client-specific sales strategies by understanding the client’s unique safety challenges and requirements and how geofencing will deliver measurable value
  • Execute strategic account planning with clear roadmaps for successful deployment and long-term growth
  • Lead expansion strategies focused on increasing device volumes and account penetration while maintaining high customer satisfaction

Experience, skills and knowledge

Even if you don’t think you 100% match all of the experience below we would encourage you to apply, as we’re always open to candidates who will learn and grow with us.

  • Demonstrable experience in a senior business development role and generating new business OR significant experience working trackside at Network Rail or one of their main principal contractors
  • Deep experience and market knowledge in rail and infrastructure
  • Demonstrable history of successfully selling to enterprise-level organizations
  • Strong communication, negotiation and rapport building skills
  • Problem-solving skills and resourcefulness under pressure
  • Experience working in a safety technology organisation advantageous

Reasons to join us

  • Choice-first flexible and remote working policy
  • Best in class private healthcare insurance
  • Judgement-free mental health policy with instant access to free therapy
  • Feedback driven, supportive and curious team with DIY mindset
  • Learning and development budget
  • Group life insurance (death in service)
  • Free railcard, if eligible

Salary

Competitive base and enterprise sales commission scheme

Hiring process

  • Initial ‘get to know you’ interview at a time that suits your schedule
  • Second, competency-based interview with the hiring manager, a key member of the commercial team and the CEO
