Business Development Manager
Business Development Manager – R&D Services – UK – Basic Salary up to £80,000 + Bonus

The Job:

We are seeking an ambitious and commercially savvy Business Development Manager to lead and shape the strategic direction of our research and development (R&D) division. This exciting leadership role will focus on driving innovation in the development of sustainable, high-performance plant varieties, directly impacting productivity and enhancing amenity landscapes. You will work closely with senior leadership, R&D teams, and external partners to translate cutting-edge research into commercial success.

As the Business Development Manager, you will combine scientific expertise with commercial strategy, ensuring that R&D innovations reach their full market potential. Your leadership will be key in advancing the company's position in the industry by identifying business opportunities, expanding partnerships, and capitalising on market trends.

  1. Develop and execute a long-term R&D strategy focused on sustainability, yield improvement, disease resistance and environmental adaptability.
  2. Lead a multidisciplinary team of researchers, breeders and technical staff to create innovative and market-driven breeding solutions.
  3. Collaborate with agronomists, product development teams and external partners to align R&D priorities with commercial market needs.
  4. Identify new business opportunities and trends to drive profitable growth by translating R&D innovations into viable products.
  5. Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, stakeholders and industry partners to expand market reach and create growth opportunities.
  6. Drive the commercial mindset within the R&D team, ensuring that the department remains focused on market applications and profitability.
  7. Champion a culture of continuous improvement and sustainability in R&D practices.
  8. Communicate R&D outcomes to stakeholders, preparing detailed reports, presentations and strategic recommendations that guide business decisions.

The Candidate:

  • BSc (or equivalent) in Plant Breeding, Agronomy, Plant Science or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in crop trials or breeding with a deep understanding of advanced breeding methodologies.
  • Proven track record in commercial strategy, business development and project management in a scientific or technical environment.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific research into practical, market-driven solutions that drive profitability and market share.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with experience managing budgets, identifying opportunities and maximising the value of R&D investments.
  • Excellent relationship-building and partnership-negotiation skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Passion for sustainability and environmental responsibility in breeding and agricultural practices.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
