Building Surveyor – The Role:

You will assist the Director of Estates with the day-to-day operation of the Estate with particular emphasis on projects covering repair, refurbishment, and improvement of the Inn’s properties.

The estate consists of a historically important collection of buildings ranging from the Hall built in 1570 through to post-war properties constructed in sympathetic style in the 1950s. Many of the buildings are listed and together with associated courtyards and gardens, all sit within ‘The Temple’ conservation area. Apart from administrative areas such as the Treasury Offices, and the Library and Banqueting rooms, all buildings house a mixture of professional and residential accommodation for members of the Bar.

Building Surveyor – Key Responsibilities:

1. To undertake building surveys, including the identification of building defects, preparation of schedules of repair and of dilapidations, and advising on appropriate forms of building contracts.
2. To work with the Estates Officer to ensure that improvement works carried out between changes of tenancy are completed in a timely fashion to minimise rent voids.
3. Provide technical advice on the maintenance of buildings, including the Inn’s Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 2* listed buildings.
4. To prepare detailed delivery programmes and specifications of works for the development, refurbishment, and maintenance of the estate.
5. Preparing budgets, specifications, and tender documents for annual decoration contracts, analysing tender results, supervising the work, and approving interim and final payments.

Building Surveyor – You:

1. Full membership of an appropriate professional body e.g. RICS (Building Surveying) or other qualifications (ideally MRICS) with a minimum of 5 years PQE.
2. Experience in a similar working environment and/or understanding of the workings of the organisation or other not-for-profit organisations.
3. Strong analytical skills with an ability to develop imaginative solutions to complex building problems.
4. Experience of surveying and working on historic buildings (Grade 1, 2, and Grade 2*) and their maintenance and refurbishment.
5. Ability to manage and monitor budgets effectively.
6. A good understanding of Regulatory and Health and Safety legislation.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
