Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for either a full time or part time Breast Screening Radiographer(s) to join our caring and supportive team.

This role focuses on attracting a mammography trained Radiographer with experience in mammography in the relevant clinical settings. The role is varied and requires the individual to undertake and support breast screening, symptomatic and assessment clinics. The work is extremely rewarding and would be best suited to individuals with the mental and physical resilience to complete this role.

Duties will be undertaken flexibly in the week to include a mixture of shift patterns to include weekend working, early starts and late finishes.

The requirement for a female to undertake this role is a Genuine Occupational Qualification and is exempt under section 7(2) of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, superseded by The Equality Act 2010.

Main duties of the job

For the Band 6 position, the post holder should possess a BSc. in Radiography or equivalent, be state registered, have attained the Postgraduate Award in Mammographic practice, hold a full current UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle for work purposes.

The post holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary team based at Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital undertaking mammography examinations related to the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic imaging referrals from local surgical out-patient clinics.

Duties will be undertaken at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital, the newly opened Coventry City Health Centre Unit, George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, and on the three mobile breast screening units according to NHSBSP guidelines and Warwickshire, Solihull & Coventry Breast Screening Service & ISO 9000:2008 standard operating procedures.

Job responsibilities
  • To undertake screening mammography across twenty mobile locations and two hospital sites.
  • To perform accurate routine screening mammography examinations in a sensitive and professional manner, and be able to adapt techniques to individual service users within the timescales in line with NHSBSP guidance.
  • To undertake mammography and associated specialist radiographic techniques at assessment and symptomatic clinics in static and satellite units as required.
  • To carry out screening mammography examinations which are optimal for radiological interpretation in 97% of cases.
  • To participate in the departmental Quality Assurance Programme and always ensuring compliance.
  • To perform regular Quality Assurance tests on the x-ray equipment (mobile units and static sites), record all results accurately and inform the Line Manager immediately of any results which are outside agreed parameters, or if the post-holder is the most senior in the department, to take actions to resolve the problem.
  • To adhere to IR(ME)R regulations and Local Rules of practice (IRR).
  • To liaise with the local Medical Physics team and with other members of the QA team to maintain regular and timely equipment checks in line with NHSBSP QA guidelines.
  • To check and document identification according to departmental practice for screening and symptomatic service users.
  • To carry out mammography examinations required during specialised procedures such as X-ray guided localisation, stereotactic biopsies including vacuum assisted technology and tomosynthesis.
  • To perform specialised mammography views in assessment and symptomatic clinics as well as using highly specialised and complex digital equipment to allow clinicians and advanced practitioners to perform accurate biopsies on impalpable lesions.
  • To assist the Radiologist or Advanced Clinical Practitioner during specialised procedures and ensure that support is provided to service users undergoing invasive procedures.
  • To image breast specimens for surgeons to ensure excision of all abnormal breast tissue.
  • To ensure that laboratory specimens are accurately labelled, documented, and transported to the pathology laboratory during clinics.
  • To document any reported breast problems, significant clinical signs and symptoms.
  • To operate RIS/PACS and associated ICT systems accurately and adhering to Trust policy.
  • To take part in regular image analysis and clinical audit sessions of mammography standards to maintain a technical repeat rate of less than 2%.
  • To take part in regular local and national client satisfaction surveys for screening clinics.
