Job summary

We are seeking a Biomedical Scientist to join the microbiology team based at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. Have well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to lead and support individual and team working.

HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists that hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in medical Microbiology or demonstrate equivalent experience will be appointed at Band 6. HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists that do not hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology will be appointed at Band 5. Public Health Wales provides the opportunity for automatic progression to Band 6 on successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology.

Main duties of the job

Being flexible, self-motivated and with good practical skills will be fundamental to your role. You will use your knowledge and skills as a Biomedical Scientist to contribute to a robust and fully operational system within the department. You will assist in building a strong team and support the Senior Biomedical Scientists to enable continual improvements in the department and throughout the Microbiology Network. An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is desirable. The post holder will support the provision of a 24/7 service in accordance with a published rota.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Biomedical Sciences Degree or equivalent qualifications acceptable for HCPC registration
  • IBMS Certificate of Competence (i.e via old blue log-book)
  • Evidence of HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD registration and participation.
Desirable

  • Further qualification e.g. MSc or Higher Specialist Portfolio
Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrates experience in an HCPC approved Bacteriology Laboratory
  • Record of professional competence and comprehensive experience in diagnostic microbiology
  • Has in depth and/or specialised knowledge and understanding of operating procedures and techniques in diagnostic microbiology.
  • Understands and can apply the principles and standards for good laboratory practice.
  • Understands and can apply the principles of Quality Assurance systems
  • Understands personal Health and Safety responsibilities
  • Undertaking Shifts in a previous role
Desirable

  • Previous participation in out of hours service.
  • Previous experience with molecular techniques.
Skills

Essential

  • Understands, can perform and teach others all aspects of routine diagnostic microbiology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels both orally and in writing
  • Ability to recognise problems and instigate corrective action.
  • Evidence of previous training/quality/H&S experience
