Job summary

The South West London Pathology Microbiology department at St George's hospital is looking for enthusiastic people to work in our team as a permanent Biomedical Scientist. We have six posts available due to recent internal promotions, and are committed to supporting the right candidates to follow a similar career pathway.

The laboratory has state of the art equipment offering full laboratory automation and a vast array of molecular platforms. The candidate must have diagnostic laboratory experience, ideally in Microbiology, and be confident in their technical abilities. Working as part of a fast-paced and large team, this is an excellent opportunity to further and develop your skills, knowledge and experience.

You will perform laboratory testing using several different methods and machines to ensure that customers receive quick and accurate results. Duties will also include sample preparation, the routine operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation, technical validation, stock control, quality related duties, verification work and training others where required.

You are expected to have outstanding organisational and communication skills, to be proactive in a high throughput laboratory, and have an in-depth knowledge of areas of bacteriology or virology that you are willing to develop further.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist you will rotate through various sections of the laboratory, under the supervision of the Senior Biomedical Scientist. The laboratory is UKAS accredited and places an emphasis on innovation, training, and high quality diagnostics.

After a period of suitable training you will take full part in a 24/7 rota including nights, late shifts and weekends.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  1. An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  2. HCPC Registration

Desirable

  1. IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  1. Proven experience of working in a diagnostic pathology department
  2. Practical experience of a range of diagnostic pathology techniques
  3. Proven practical experience using diagnostic pathology laboratory equipment
  4. Experience of working with a laboratory computer system
  5. Experience of quality management systems
  6. Knowledge of health and safety issues
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  1. Proven experience in the relevant pathology discipline
