Role: Biomedical Scientist - Histology
Site: HCA Laboratories - Shropshire House, 10a Capper St, London WC1E 6JA
Hours: 37.5 Hours per week Monday - Friday
Contract Type: Permanent

We're looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join our Histology team at our HCA Laboratories based in Shropshire House. HCA Laboratories has over 35 years' experience in providing pathology services, for acute care in our HCA Hospitals, IVF Clinics, Insurance work, healthcare screening and GP services. We cover all disciplines in pathology including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, and microbiology and serology, with each laboratory equipped with the best available analytical instrumentation.

As a Biomedical Scientist you will assist the Senior Biomedical Scientist and liaise with Section Head with the day to day and strategic management of the Histopathology Department. In this role, you will be required to use your skills, theory of Histology and knowledge to provide a high quality and effective Histopathology laboratory service.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Follow HCA Labs standing policies and procedures to ensure an efficient delivery of laboratory service.
  2. Comply with the code of practice of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and HCPC and work consistently to ISO 15189 (2012) and UKAS accreditation.
  3. Carry out unsupervised routine and more complex investigations and analysis of tissue using specialised laboratory equipment.
  4. Be responsible for delegated tasks involved in the day-to-day organisation and delivery of a clinical pathology service with high standards of patient care.
  5. Assist with the teaching of new staff where appropriate.
  6. Cooperate with supervisory staff and Pathologists in the introduction and development of new and improved techniques.
  7. Maintain good work relationships with all members of staff, and promote effective teamwork.
  8. Use skills, theory of Histology, and knowledge to provide a high quality and effective Histopathology laboratory service.
  9. Participate in rotation through all areas of the department.
  10. Perform timely and accurate processing of samples and perform laboratory techniques in accordance with departmental approved SOPs, including but not limited to the following: QC of slides at send out; Frozen section techniques; Biopsy transfer; Embedding; Microtomy; Special staining techniques.
What you'll bring:
  1. Degree in Biomedical Science or similar.
  2. MSc desirable.
  3. HCPC Registered.
  4. Experience in a Histology lab.
  5. Member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
  6. Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences is desirable.
