Job Description

Role: Biomedical Scientist - Haematology
Site: London, HCA Laboratories (Shropshire House)
Hours: Permanent, Full time, 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: 7.5 hour shifts Monday-Friday with weekend rota participation also required
Salary: Competitive with weekend work paid as overtime (with excellent benefits)

HCA Laboratories has over 35 years' experience in providing pathology services, for acute care in our HCA Hospitals, IVF Clinics, Insurance work, healthcare screening and GP services. We cover all disciplines in pathology including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, and microbiology and serology, with each laboratory equipped with the best available analytical instrumentation.

As a Biomedical Scientist, you will perform the speedy and accurate processing of samples, validate results and to assist the Department Head in Haematology as required. You will perform a high-quality analytical role, enabling the provision of a comprehensive pathology service for laboratory users.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week and the salary being offered is competitive dependent on skills and experience. This is a BMS 1 position (Band 6 equivalent).

The weekday shift times are:

08:00 - 16:30
09:00 - 17:30
10:00 - 16:30
12:30 - 21:00

Weekends:

08.00 - 14:00
09:00 - 20:30

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Speedy and accurate processing of samples
  • Interpretation, validation and timely reporting of results
  • Monitor and enter results from referral laboratories
  • Participate in the Haematology/multi-disciplinary Weekend Rota
  • Participate in the multi-disciplinary Night Shift Rota where required
  • Complete External Quality Control
  • Deal with telephone enquiries
  • Assist Section Leader and BMS 3 / 2 with the day to day running of Haematology section
  • Ensure equipment in Haematology working correctly
  • Ensure internal and external quality schemes are performed
  • Liaise and assist specimen Reception and other sections within the laboratory
  • Adhere to Health and Safety policies
  • Follow HCA policies and procedures
  • Follow SOP's and in accordance with manufacturers operating instructions
  • Stock control and rotation
  • Identify own training and development needs and undertake training/education as required. Achieve competence in the areas outlined in the training manual. Attend HCA mandatory training
  • Maintain professional development records in compliance with IBMS and HCPC requirements. Treat all users of the service in an efficient and courteous manner and to ensure that all enquiries that cannot be dealt with directly are passed on to an appropriate senior member of the Pathology department.

  • Experience working as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and appropriate laboratory experience.

  • Adhere to, and work in accordance with all appropriate guidelines and policies.
