Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the Biochemistry and Immunology Department within Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services for a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist at Nuneaton. This post is primarily in the Immunology Department.

The applicant must have HCPC registration and relevant NHS experience. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard working person to work closely with laboratory staff in our busy but friendly department. As a Biomedical Scientist in Pathology the post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service analyzing and reporting on blood and other body fluids to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management within the hospital.

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) is one of the largest NHS pathology providers in the Midlands, and is a clinically led Network service providing services within Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding counties.

As an expanding organisation, we are looking for a highly motivated, flexible, forward thinking and driven individual who can work within our team to deliver a high quality, first class Biochemistry and Immunology service to our users. The departments are about to go-live with state of the art new analysers, which will be at the forefront of Clinical Diagnostics in the UK.

Main duties of the job

As a Biomedical Scientist in Pathology the post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service analysing and reporting on blood, urine and other body materials to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management within the hospital.

Subject to contract, training and competence assessment, the post holder may discharge analytical duties either working alone or as part of a small team.

Diagnostic services are provided over a number of network sites supporting 4 acute hospitals: University Hospital Coventry, Hospital of St Cross Rugby, George Eliot Hospital Nuneaton, and South Warwick Foundation Trust in Warwick, 9 Clinical Commissioning Groups, and over 250 GP practices, covering a population of 1.6 million.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated and friendly team in our Immunology Laboratory, as part of Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services. We are seeking a skilled Biomedical Scientist with a passion for delivering high-quality diagnostic services, including protein electrophoresis, autoimmunity, and allergy diagnostics.

  1. Perform daily routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material. This will be done on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures.
  2. Perform daily interpretation of diagnostic investigations. Know how to proceed in the event of technical / analytical non conformity and when to inform the line manager.
  3. Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation.
  4. As appropriate record reports for authorisation in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them.
  5. Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal records.
  6. Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff.
  7. Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff.
  8. Under supervision, develop and investigate new techniques as required by the changing needs of the service.
  9. To regularly inform and discuss progress of training towards a post registration specialist competence portfolio, with the laboratory training officer and other senior staff as appropriate.
