Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries.

We are looking for top talent to build and scale the next generation of technologies, products and services to help our customers build a better—more sustainable—world. We need self-motivated, intelligent and team-oriented individuals to make our plans a reality. Individuals with high emotional intelligence, humility and openness to discovery will thrive in the teams we are building.

The opportunity

With a growing focus for Electric Vehicles (EV) applications, Caterpillar is developing its own Lithium-Ion battery systems that will be used in almost all power ranges. The Battery Chemitronics Team is responsible for the Battery Management Software (BMS) strategies, integration and validation.

This team applies deep technical knowledge to develop control algorithms, assess software performance, BMS integration into machine applications, analyze battery data, review and sign-off to release BMS software updates to the field. This is a highly visible team that works directly with all areas of engineering.

As a Battery Software Controls and Integration Engineer, you will report to the section’s Engineering Manager and take your work direction from Tech Leads within the team. This role will be focused on developing, calibrating and validating BMS control strategies for a variety of Caterpillar and 3rd Party applications. You will also have responsibility for analysing large datasets for fault investigation, performance validation and general conformance against requirements. You will work directly with Caterpillar Machine Groups to ensure the BMS software integrates correctly with the machine.

What you will do:

  • Convert high level system requirements into viable battery control strategies for down-selection

  • Develop detailed control strategy requirements and algorithms using Matlab/Simulink controls modelling

  • Calibrate and validate control strategies using embedded SIL models

  • Develop test procedures to assess performance and validation of control strategies for HIL, Lab and machine testing

  • Collaborate with machine level software teams to ensure the correct integration of control strategies

  • Use your battery and controls knowledge to triage, diagnose and solve BMS software issues

  • Automating processes to achieve high levels of quality, consistency and velocity

  • Write requirements, procedures, and reports and formally present on outcomes.

  • Collaborate closely with the global team.

What you have:

Technical Excellence - Level Working Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and experience with BMS control strategies including SoC, SoH, SoF and cell balancing

  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink in the fields of simulation, controls or data analysis

  • Experience with Lithium-Ion battery systems and control

  • Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.

Analytical Thinking - Level Working Knowledge:

  • Experience with processing large datasets and creating clear visualisation of results with Matlab

  • Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue and determining its significance.

  • Makes a systematic comparison of two or more alternative solutions.

  • Uses logic and intuition to make inferences about the meaning of the data and arrive at conclusions.

Effective Communications - Level Working Knowledge:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills (written/verbal/presentation communication, teamwork)

  • Listens to feedback without defensiveness and uses it for own communication effectiveness.

  • Makes oral presentations and writes reports needed for own work.

Problem Solving - Level Extensive Experience:

  • Excellent problem solver who is self-motivated and able to deliver with minimum supervision.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) within a field of Engineering or Computer Science or progressive relevant experience in an engineering function.

Additional Information:

  • Up to 15% travel requirement.

  • This position is currently a hybrid in-office work model, requiring a 3-day weekly office presence onsite at our Peterborough office and remote work for the remaining days. However, work arrangements may be adjusted at any time based on business needs.
