Job description

Bank B6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - INW

Build up and maintain key relationships with referring services (including within the MDTs, primary and secondary care services, voluntary and third sector organisations) to facilitate appropriate referrals and an understanding of the role of the Speech & Language Therapist and the Multi-professional team.

Be responsible for the supervision of junior staff; Speech & Language Therapists, Assistants and Speech & Language Therapy students.

Work in a variety of settings in the community to deliver appropriate treatment including community clinics, client's own home, schools and nurseries.

Support self and service development through active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and by participating in any audit or research being undertaken by the service.

Main Duties of the Job
  • To provide advice and support to others regarding the management and care of children and young people with SLCN.
  • To adapt practice to meet individual client and families' circumstances.
  • To deliver a Specialist Speech and Language Therapy service consisting of evaluation of interventions for complex and difficult cases such as tribunals as required.

To deliver Speech and Language Therapy provision to children as specified in Education Health and Care Plans in line with the Children and Families Act 2014.

To manage children with challenging behaviours including the application of appropriate management strategies.

Job Responsibilities
  • To assess, develop and implement Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy provision for children with SLCN including additional specialist intervention and support to children with one or more specific clinical areas e.g. Complex Needs, ASD, referred to the designated locality, presenting with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible.
  • To act in a specialist lead role within the Education team in one or more clinical specialties, e.g., dysphagia, autism, multi-sensory impairment, severe learning difficulties.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of measures to monitor and develop services including meeting high quality standards of care as set out in national and local policy, including that of the RCSLT, HCPC.
  • To adhere to relevant procedures including Safeguarding Children, SEN procedures and other legal frameworks.
Person Specification
Education
  • Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice - Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT.
  • Further study in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study.
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Masters degree or equivalent.
  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs).
Experience
  • Work with children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties including those associated with complex needs.
  • Experience of supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Collaborative work with parents and other professionals, across settings.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for education and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children.
  • Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management.
  • Knowledge of typical child development of Speech & Language and general developmental milestones.

£22.92 to £27.48 an hour. Weekly pay will include: Basic pay + HCAS + 12.07% Holiday pay.
