We are looking for an experienced and passionate Consultant Applied Psychologist (Clinical / Counselling) to join the Deaf Mental Health Service at the National Centre for Mental Health (Birmingham). The post involves the provision of specialist psychological assessment and evidence-based psychological interventions to Deaf Mental Health Service users, across in-patient and out-patient settings. Being allied to the multi-disciplinary team in the Service, the post holder will act as a member of the team, attend meetings and offer supervision, advice and consultation on clients' psychological care to team colleagues. The post holder is also expected to provide clinical leadership within the Deaf Service alongside other senior managers or clinicians.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the systematic provision of a high quality clinical psychology service within the Deaf Service across all sectors of care. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service and to ensure that systems are in place and working effectively for the clinical and professional supervision and support of all other psychologists within the service for which the post holder has designated professional responsibility, including clear systems for effective recruitment, professional appraisal, and the identification of CPD needs across the service. As a major requirement of the job, to act as a highly specialist resource to the wider professional community and to carry out audit, policy and service development and research activities and/or programmes. To propose and implement policy and service development changes within the Deaf Mental Health Service.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology AND Registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice relevant to deaf mental health.

Knowledge

  • Substantial assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist including post qualification experience within Deaf Mental Health Services across a wide range of care settings such as inpatient, outpatient, community, primary care, and residential care settings.
  • Knowledge of legislation and national developments and their implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and deaf mental health in general.

Skills

  • Experience of providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Substantive experience of teaching, training, professional and clinical supervision to psychological and non-psychological professions.
  • Experience of providing clinical and strategic leadership within a multi-professional setting.
  • A high level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically as a 'team player' in a multiprofessional setting, demonstrating respect and appreciation of the contributions from other team members.
  • Active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines at a national level (e.g. by representing the BPS in the development of the NICE deaf mental health guidelines).
