Job Summary

QEHB has an opening for an Operations Manager in one of the largest tertiary centres in the UK. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to grapple with the daily running of the ENT department, branching into exciting sub-speciality complexities. Recovery from a post-pandemic world is a key target for these departments. Increasing activity and expansion provide logistical challenges that will require the post holder to think creatively and adapt seemingly to changing environments. There will not be a dull day in this busy and varied role. Development of our Operations Managers is a central focus and long term goals can be worked towards in close liaison with line management support. With the countless development opportunities and learning experiences available in this role, the successful candidate will gain exposure to operational management across two Hospital Sites, working across stakeholder boundaries to a variety of areas in and outside the hospital.

This will be a cross-site role primarily based at Heartlands, with at least one day per week to be spent at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The expectation of the role will be that you work at both Heartlands & Queen Elizabeth sites weekly.

Main Duties of the Job

The Operations Manager is responsible for promoting the vision and values of University Hospitals Birmingham, leading by example and ensuring that they demonstrate those values in their leadership behaviours and how we support our teams and deliver our services.

The Operations Manager is responsible for delivering the Trust's Strategy, within their area of responsibility, incorporating the following:

  1. To provide day to day operational management support for the Department of Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) which is currently based over four sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. In addition, daily operational management support is required across CDG9A.
  2. The Operations Manager will work with the General Manager to provide business and managerial support in order that the activity, quality, and financial objectives of the above services are successfully delivered.
  3. In particular, the Operations Manager will focus on ensuring patients receive treatment within NHS agreed waiting times by ensuring daily management of all key performance and national standards within ENT such as the current 52-week RTT target & 62-day cancer targets.
  4. To be a member of the Departmental Management team, deputising for the General Manager when required, to provide and manage services to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications

  • Good general level of education including core subjects at GCSE grades A -- C or equivalent

Desirable

  • Degree or equivalent professional Management qualification
  • Further management training and/or relevant managerial experience to post graduate diploma level

Experience

  • Previous experience of working to NHS key performance indicators and national standards
  • Experience in handling confidential information
  • Experience with dealing with patients, relatives and the general public
  • Previous line management experience of staff
  • Working Knowledge of waiting list systems
  • Knowledge of NHS and aims of its structure
  • Knowledge of medical staffing issues
  • Knowledge of all the PAS systems

Desirable

  • Experience of working to NHS key performance and national standards within Surgery
  • Experience in managing in-patient and outpatient waiting lists and designing and implementing mitigating actions as required

  • Prepared with reasonable notice to work outside of core hours, including weekends, for which time in lieu will be given
  • Prepared to cross sites at short notice
